Ok so my partner went home and purchased one of these as she wanted a smart phone.

I am a bit bored of my iPhone so we have swapped lol.

Now whenever I do any research about this phone I find a lot of detail on the i9000 but im not keen on munting the phone due to it being a different model.

I assume the i9500 is some sort of international model only?

Can i update this with the gingerbread roms intended for the i9000?

Also wtf is Samsung kies? I assume its the kinda itunes variant for the Samsung Galaxy?

I assume the i9500 is some sort of international model only? Doesn't exist unfortunately, there is however an i7500(older), i9003(Galaxy S but with cheaper screen and slower processor), i5500(smallish screen, also i5503t Telecom varient)

Best thing to do is:
Hit Applications, Settings, scroll down to About Phone and check the "Model Number"

No, well it depends what the model number says, there will be different GB for different phones

That is correct, it's like iTunes only:
- A bit buggier
- Not as much bloatware

nah the phone externally looks like the Galaxy S i9000 just has different text on it when it starts up.

Im just gonna assume it is a i9000 then.

Ill get a data cable in the next few days from tardme(left overseas :( ) and see what its all about.  Hopefully the Gingerbread update is out shortly for this phone!

Im an old hand at iPhones but somewhat of an Android noob.

Is it worth getting custom ROMs and all that?

What does it say when you hit Applications, Settings, scroll down to About Phone and check the "Model Number" as Vinnieg suggested?

You could end up bricking the phone, especially if you don't know what phone you've got
