X5 or LG p500. Both good mid-range phones with a lot of customisation options on the net.

Have a look on http://www.mobicity.co.nz/ they have quite a wide range of phones. The HTC wildife sits in your price range, but the screen is only 3.2".

You might have to spend more like $400-$600 if you want a decent size screen.

Samsung Galaxy Ace is in this bracket and has a generous screen size.

If you increase your budget you could get an Ideos X5 (from 2degrees, works equally well on Vodafone) which is usually $550 but can sometimes be had for $400 with topup specials. I have one, its an awesome phone and has decent sized screen

Another +1 for the Defy. A very happy owner! I got mine at Eking.co.nz who are currently selling it for 399.

In that price bracket I'd also go for the Defy.
