Hopefully the formatting in this table will take...

Just in case it doesn't, Android will lead with 38.9%, iOS second on 18.2%, BB OS on 14.2%, Linux on 3.7% and Windows a meagre 3.8%.

Looking forward to 2015 courtesy of IDC's crystal ball and navel-gazing, Android will grow to 43.8%. WinPhone will skyrocket to 20.3% (er... really?), iOS will drop to 16.9% and RIM's BB OS will still manage 13.4%. No, that's what it says here. Honest, I'm not making this up.

I can believe some of that but wow... 20% for WinPhone? Can I have some of whatever they're smoking at IDC's predictions division?

Edit: OK, it's official. Table formatting sucks in this BB software. So no table for youze chaps and chapettes. Sorry. Maybe I'll do some screen captures in future. or maybe not.

Galaxy S has gone to its new owner. HTC Sensation has gone to its new
owner. Galaxy S3 has gone to its new owner. Now using Galaxy Note 3. Skipping Note 4 I think...

I liked this bit: "Success requires speed. We will be swift", written on February 11th. I wonder what their interpretation of "swift" is? (looks at calendar...)

"Analysts" have too often been boosters for whoever is paying the research money. It's often some innocuously-named front group for a behind-the-scenes software or hardware vendor. No one would be so crass as to "buy" market research. Instead they fund "independent" researchers who know where the money is coming from.

A but like all those government bodies in NZ who are supposedly independent....except they are appointed (and re-appointed) by a government minister they know better than to annoy.

Windows has to get these sorts of levels to maintain any momentum. The mobile space must leverage off the desktop market penetration because the future will be more in the mobile/portable platforms.

Nokia always has good market share in the overall phone market. If Nokia exclusively use wondows, then some of that will rub off..... maybe

As I walk around the streets, the people I see using Nokia phones are almost exclusively using feature phones. In my experience, they do not want (or see any need for) a smartphone.

Nokia with WinMo (or MeeGo or Symbian 3.0) may not be what they are looking for. They just want a cheap, good quality phone they can talk on and send / receive TXTs and see no need for anything else.

WinMo may be as useless to them as iOS or Android.

Thing is that's a problem for Nokia. You make the money off the high end / high margin stuff. Nokia is very soon going to be competing with workers paid a lot less than is acceptable in Finland.

Compare that with Apple who is holding second (about 20%) with one phone (yeah, and last years model) which costs over $1000 here in NZ.

One of these strategies is a going to make a lot of money, the other isn't.

Nokia / Windows is going to be the interesting tech story of 2012. It may be the end of Windows trying to do mobile, it may be the end of Nokia as we know it. Or it may be the start of a brave new world.
