Hi guys
just wondering how to stop my samsung galaxy phone using SIM data and use wifi instead?

am new to android and just got new phone and inserted SIM etc., all went smoothly but seems like its using data from SIM as i received sms from vodafone that i used max limit for the day ..blah.. i've wifi at home and work and want to use that instead.

BTW yes i connected phone to my wifi but something still using SIM data connection.

I can disable data on the network side but this will also stop PXT (MMS)

Why don't you just disable mobile data within Android? It will however stop MMS from working.

where do i find mobile data option? i dont think i'll be using MMS that often so dont mind not working.

disabling mobile data in android does not stop MMS. It just stops internet data.

It can be found in the quick settings in the drop down options if you have 2.3 otherwise go menu > settings > wireless and networks then look for the mobile network option.

You can also download mobile data switchers from the market so you can put a widget on your homescreen

Are you sure? The best way is to chagne the internet APN to something rubbish I think, leave the MMS APN alone and you should be OK (that's how some of the data switchers work, e.g. APNDroid). If you just switch off the data I'm pretty sure MMS will stop too.

Doesn't on my Desire. Data off via quick settings drop down and pxt still works fine.

This idea is no good if you're on Vodafone - because their network will accept any APN. Part of there reason for doing this was the number of APN related support issues with foreign handsets.

Also check your WiFi sleep policy is set to never so that when your phone locks it doesn't turn off WiFi leaving your mobile data as your net connection.

I use tasker and have a profile set to disable mobile data when wifi is switched on, connected or not. Another profile witha custom action to turn on mobile data but turn off auto-sync at the same time.

I use "Data Enabler", which is a free App from the market place. works great and it will have an amazing difference to your battery life as well (just about doubles mine when data is off). Or if you are at home, have your WiFI setting on the ph turned on and the ph will automatically use that instead of mobile data.

another mystery i need figure out i think as my phone running only 2.2(bought yesterday!). probably i first need to install this firmware i guess.

do i just connect mobile and update the firmware with kies software? or is there a wireless option?

You may want to check your 'synch' settings. If they are on by default then your phone will be popping off to the net frequently to check your various accounts.
To get a handle on my data usage and battery use I installed manual on/off widgets for wifi, 3G, gps, bluetooth and airplane mode. It can be a little bit of a hassle while you toggle the connection you want on, but you will be sure of what you are connected to until you get the hang of Android.
