Be good if it had FTA. And can record to the tablet. Tablets have a lot of storage these days, be handy at times.

If sanity could prevail (and egos get checked at the door) then FTA shouldnt be too hard, should it? Providing there is no cost to TVNZ or Mediaworks to provide stream and no cost for Sky to incorporate the streams into SkyGo then it should be an easy outcome. TVNZ and Mediaworks get additional eyeballs without having to pay away (like AppleTV or equiv) and Sky gets more stickiness without additional cost.

Why would putting a stream into SkyGo be any different than via any other medium (AppleTV, PS, Xbox, etc etc etc). Its an outlet - and one with the development cost already bourne by Sky?

I can only assume its due to TVNZ and Mediaworks get a financial benefit from their apps or website - advertising. That doesnt matter on a Skybox as the ads are on their own channels, but if the eyeballs are watching Three on SkyGo, the eyeballs dont see the extra ads on the Three app or the Three website, that are outside of the broadcast title.

why would sky waste money paying for the bandwidth to support other stations channels. Skygo has no ads for their on demand however the FTA put ads in their on demand programs. Also if sky just "streamed" their channels from tvnz/mediaworks content system it brings in issues of 3rd parties controlling what is seen in sky apps (i.e. ads, r18 programs etc).

I'm unsure how much extra cost there would be, if any. While users can just go to the FTA OD apps, there is very nice added value if Sky Go was everything in one place. Its just a live stream, what Sky already broadcast on their STB. If users want to watch FTA, they will. Thats doesnt affect Sky as they will watch it anyway, so lets make it easier and have SkyGo all in one place

They would need to bring the feeds in (which they already do) then load that to their CDN, there is a cost to stream that out. There could be a license fee from TVNZ/Meidaworks to "stream" their content online. Sky would also not be able to remove the ads from these channels which could also have contract issues for their ad sales department and what ads are displayed. It could also effect the over all feel of the app.

Not saying it won't happen just saying its not an easy "just add them" thing.

Dingbatt: The only thing I've noted so far is that the app is set to portrait mode until you start watching video, then it follows the device orientation.
Now all I need is a Chromecast link in the corner of the app like Lightbox, YouTube, Netflix, TVNZOndemand, ThreeNow, etc and it would be great.

Is that official statement?

If no Chromecast support, presumably screen mirroring between between supported android devices would get around this?

I haven't updated to the new app yet, but we used SkyGO for the Cricket this summer, and successfully mirrored from my Samsung Note 8 to Chromecast, with very little trouble.

Logged in just then and see that they still require Flash, really, who on earth is in charge over at Sky TV that believes that using Flash is remotely acceptable these days?

Sky Go logo on TV with "You are not permitted to view SKY GO on this device" at bottom of screen.

Video plays on Phone with sound coming out TV.

What a load of crap, what's different about running HDMI from computer to TV, and mirroring from phone.

They sure know how to kill convenience.

The 26 channel Live TV lineup is the same on the SkyGo website. There is no On Demand but there is a Catch Up. I cant recall if there was a catch up before

The Catch Up has a lot of content, but its not all of On Demand, but it appears very similar.

Was there a Catch Up before on the website?

With that said, it would be good for (as an example) those going away for a weekend and not having sky at your location. If you toook a chromecast and a mobile phone you could theoretically have a nice viewing experience that you have actually already paid for (yes, I understand the monetary implications of freeloaders and cheats, but what about the honest majority?)

It can also be due to content license agreements. Yes the agreements can be "you can only let your customers play this on a phone/tablet and not chrome cast / apply play it to a tv" As Android and iOS is an all or nothing type of thing with casting then there is not much sky can do and to fall inside the agreement they might just need to kill it for all media within the skygo app

Content agreements can be very interesting. You might be able to stream it on your tablet in your home but not on the same table over mobile data etc.

I went away at Waitangi weekend. I watched the Superbowl (which I consider essential viewing every year) on a tablet using SkyGo (the place I stayed didnt have ESPN nor Duke). It was a great viewing experience knowing that my other prospect was to watch it a sports bar. Did I need to have it on a larger screen?

And how would you regard the honest majority of accommodation providers that might use Sky as a marketing differentiator? Personally I think the honest majority of consumers would be happy to be able to watch-out-of-home without any additional cost - the ability to throw it to a larger screen has the pros of better viewing but the cons of moral hazard.

Im not sure its a small issue, getting free sport.Its been recommended here over and over on the how can I watch this sport threads. Many do it. The Sky App will allow what you suggest, so I can only assume it will take a while to find a way to authenticate a genuine user, and as its not now, I can only assume its part of the Cisco platform that will be in place later.
