Just had a couple of thoughts on this new service.

One thing that really bugs me about NTSC to PAL conversion is the so called PAL speedup effect. This is something we had to put up with before digital but alas it still persists on broadcast TV (thankfully no longer on BluRay).

If you ever manage to compare say The Big Bang Theory on local TV versus a US sourced version, the pitch increase in very noticeable (or is that because I have good pitch?). Sheldon sounds like a chipmunk!

Does the new service send down the content sped up (so they are using 1080i/50 sourced content) or have they purchased 1080i/60?

Secondly I watch Netflix/Hulu/Vudu/Amazon on my TV (PS3, Roku) and occasionally Netflix on my (Android) phone. Looks like this new service cannot offer me any other those display choices though there is some talk about an Android client coming soon. But I wonder like TV1 and TV3 on demand it will be Samsung devices only?

Without devices to play the content we are going to be limited to stereo audio whereas Netflix, Vudu and Amazon I think now do DD+.

Scoring 24 is great. TV3 treated the last season with disdain playing it on TV4 (or whatever it was called then) SD only.

Looks like cherry picking the best of amazon prime/netflix content which is very clever.

Overall very impressed with the lineup, but not enough to take it over netflix.

Looks like a great service but won't be using it until one of the devices I have at home is supported as I don't have a smart TV or want to connect a laptop to the TV / HT amp. I have an Apple TV, Chromecast, WD TV and TiVo but I can't see it ever being on the last two devices though I could cast it from my Chrome browser to my Chromecast.. Changing channels would be a bit of a pig..

Any BETA testers able to test if casting a TAB with Chromecast works okay? TV2 has an annoying black bar in the middle of the stream for some reason (TV3 doesn't do this).

Also, Lightbox, I see SmartTV's have been mentioned. Any chance of supporting connected Blu-Ray players? My Sony players has players Quickflix etc. Xbox support would be another option for me.

you can airplay to your Apple TV. I've been doing that from my iPad. Works great. (for the kiddies, actually easier for them to select content by touching it too)

There is content on Lightbox which isn't on Netflix and vice versa. Take both, and it's still cheaper than Sky!

Will it have advertisements?

That was my reason for cancelling Hulu+.

I wouldn't mind, say, a 15 second ad at the start of a show, but I would hate them to interrupt the show.

This does look good.
If it was to work on either MediaPortal (prefered), XBMC, or Plex, I'd look seriously at it. An API is all you'd need to provide, I'm sure someone would pickup app development pretty quickly.

If not, it's not going to work for me. I currently have one PC that does everything seamlessly, I have no intention of adding devices or methods to the mix.

Good on you Lightbox,
Its a great start I understand this is a work in progress on content and devices but good on you for stirring the online streaming content pot in NZ, its now time to hit the accelerator :) and if you do I'll bet you will do well.

I have the Beta invite, just need the supported devices to catch-up.

We have Vodafone cable 130Mbit - I'll test the high quality streams.

After reading comments on limiting devices, this maybe a problem for us in that we will not run multiple concurrent connections but may be watching from a number of devices. The Netflix model would work here but the Lightbox one would fail currently.

Example: Devices we own that we would or could use for Lightbox.
* LG 55 Inch 2013 TV - WiFi integrated - not used directly as cannot get a Netflix app
* Samsung 40 Inch - 2010 - No WiFi but has Ethernet - not used but could be currently connected to PC.
* PS4 - I use for Netflix
* Android Tablet 12.2 Pro - great for Netflix so should be great for Lightbox
* Daughers Windows 8.1 laptop - she uses for Netflix and now can use Lightbox
* Wife's PC Win 8.1 - she uses for Netflix and now can use Lightbox
* Young daughters Android tablet she is just 5 and can launch Netflix
* Samsung S4
* Motorola Moto G.

For now android users should be able to connect via the Lightbox webpage and stream directly through the browser I would think I'll check tonight.

you can airplay to your Apple TV. I've been doing that from my iPad. Works great. (for the kiddies, actually easier for them to select content by touching it too)

I have concerns about AirPlay being a longterm viable solution for us. During the Great NetFlix Outage of 2014, I was connecting via the UnoTelly provided VPN on my iPad Air and iPhone 5, and using AirPlay to our Apple TV (Gen 3) to get the content on our TV. After streaming one show (which always streamed fine on the iOS device), I'd have to reboot the Apple TV, router (Airport Extreme Gen 5), or both. Otherwise we'd not get Airplay working correctly. Often the content would fail to Airplay altogether, but sometimes we'd get audio playing through the TV but no video.
