Using a Parallel Imported mobile phone (example: Sony Ericsson K700i) are you able to use all the functionality of the phone?

A Vodafone shop assistant told me I’d NOT be able to use PXT. I don’t believe him.
I believe you just have to code in the service numbers and the urls.
i.e. Message Service -> http://pxt.vodafone.net.nz/pxt send
And maybe a bit more....

The same assistant had never heard of a Sony Ericsson K750, so that’s why I’m asking you guys.

So, do the following work on a Parallel Imported Sony Ericsson K700i?

TXT – Yes/No
PXT – Yes/No
Video(3GPP) – Yes/No
WAP – Yes/No
Email – Yes/No
GPRS – Yes/No
SIM2 (Vodafone info stored on the SIM) – Yes/No

If you have a Parallel Imported K700i phone and have these functions working, a quick note to say so would be great.

I’m not considering the Chinese models of a given phone (i.e. K750i v K750c) Although I'd be interest to know what the differences are other than odd characters on the keyboard.
Not worried if I loose Vodafone live (No big loss)
I’m aware Vodafone has input in the build of the phones (i.e. V800 compared to the Z800)
But I don’t believe Vodafone live is worth an extra $200.00 on a top end phone.
Like the S710i which now has EDGE, what happens with the new 3G phones as they seem to be more carrier dependant. Is this where Parallel Importers and Vodafone part company?

Thank you, for any infomation.

Most/all services should work regardless of where the phone comes from. Of course you have carriers locking the firmware to prevent you from changing networks and the like.

To easily set up MMS/GPRS, use Vodas wireless portal. If there is a problem with MMS'ing or any network limitation, PM Muppet if you live in Auckland - he might be able to hook you up for a reflash.

In vodas web mail, they also have the option of sending an auto setup to your phone for email accounts if memory serves me correctly.

You'll find that a voda live! branded phone has no real advantages over an unbranded phone of the same model. You'll still be able to access the voda live portal to read your news etc.

My only experience with a 'c' model of a SE phone would be with the Sony Ericcson P910c. It had Chinese input/language support (and english too!) and was MMS-locked to Chinamobiles network.

You'll find that with the 'a' models (a is for American probably), its still a tri-band phone, just it supports 850?/1800/1900 frequences, while the i and c do 900/1800/1900 frequences.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense, kinda busy with other things.

CokeMaster,

Thank you for the info. You've explained what I suspected.
Good bit of info about the c model being locked to MMS network.

Maybe this is what the Vodafone man was trying to explain, but didn't know his i,a or c.

The K750i have downloadable/upgradable OS, wonder if this'll help in the future.

Anyone else care to share?

Another note: Other models 'i' and 'a' may contain locks depending on the operator that sold them.

"The K750i have downloadable/upgradable OS, wonder if this'll help in the future."

Yes, you can update the newer SE phones by using a DSS-25 type sync station. As far as I know, when you update, you'll update to the newest operator approved firmware which probably will keep the locks if any in.
If you have an unbranded handset, it doesn't matter.

I'd recommend that you check with Parallel Imported to see if the firmware is locked or branded. If it isn't, you should be fine.

I believe Parallel Imported are pretty careful with their phones now, simply because they don't want the bad PR if people can't use all of the features of the phone in NZ. Having said that without naming any names there have been other importers in Auckland importing phones, that have been locked to networks with no way of using all of the MMS functions. It pays to check or even get it in writing if you're concerned or maybe get them to set it up instore..
