Hi all. Am I doing something wrong? The short version: I have out TIVO S3 modded, have tried using it, and have found we are missing a lot of shows.
The longer version: I am very grateful to the modders and OzTivo community, and I had great hopes as I love the Tivo interface and don't see anything devices. The guide data seemed pretty buggy over Christmas, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt as a lot of shows go on hiatus over Christmas and are replaced by repeats, and the other problems I had with shows being marked as repeats when they were new, or marked as new when repeats I put down to teething problems and I was willing to wait it out. But tonight I noticed we are still having problems, e.g:
- Three advertised a new show "9JKL" which I could not find on tivo a week or two ago, and I searched again tonight and still can't find it, though the Freeview TV Guide online says there is a new episode on Feb 15th.
- There have been times I have seen a show advertised, and looked for it by channel for that day and found whole days of tivo guide data missing for that channel.
- I was having trouble with tivo not recording new episodes of multiple series (The Middle, Modern Family, Big Bang Theory, etc) if set to record "First Run Only", so the only way I could get them to record was to set it to record repeats, and there were so many repeats on that I we got swamped with repeats and spent a lot of time sorting the repeats from the new ones. I haven't re-checked in the last few weeks, but I suspect it is still a problem and I am loosing motivation and the wife is loosing patience.
- I have the nagging feeling I am missing shows (e.g. New episodes of Big Bang Theory), but its time consuming to prove, and all Online TV Guides I've found to try to compare to are pretty terrible for various reasons (either don't list SxxEyy) or only have a day in advance etc.
The only thing I can think of is that when I got it back, modded, that I only added new season passes - I did not delete old season passes, but would that cause problems?
I've very keen to hear other people's experiences or possible solutions. I really don't want a panny or dish.
It seems you haven't been brought up to speed by the person who modified your Tivo. Firstly, you will only get up to 7 days guide data, unless the current sources for the guide change in the future. That's why, as of today, guide data for the 15th February isn't there yet, but maybe there this evening? Remember, this is a volunteer driven effort with no guarantees. I think you'll find all Freeview boxes that get their guide data over the air are also limited to 7 days. Secondly, when setting season passes, you need to retain what has always been the default setting of "First Runs and Reruns". If you modify your season passes to "First Runs only" nothing gets recorded. This may change in future. You don't need to delete your old season passes, but they won't work due to differences in the codes used by the underlying guide data. It's a good idea to delete them though, as you'll then be able to keep track of what you have chosen to record. I think I speak for most people in that the guide has mostly been pretty good so far. If you have any concerns about specifics, please feel free to PM me, and I'll pass these onto the developers handling the NZ guide. The Aussies are only getting 3x days of EPG guide data BTW, so we're comparatively better off. They have so many regions and channels, that NZ is a walk in the park by comparison.
The following Channel Scan process is also worth doing to tidy up channels including Maori (5) and Te-Reo(15) so that you get the correct data.
Go to Read New Messages and Settings
Choose Settings
Choose Channels
Choose Channel Scan
Choose “Delete previously scanned channels”
Let your Tivo scan for channels, then when completed, choose to add them all.
You can then delete any you don’t want listed from the “Channel List” menu item.
I agree, the guide data has been pretty good. There are some channels that seem to have a whole lot of nothing out beyond 3-4 days, but, mostly they pick it up before they need to record. The biggest hassle is trying to record a short series of one-off movies when you can't set the next week to record sometimes because the data doesn't go out that far. All-in-all though I'm pretty happy and don't seem to have missed many episodes.
Many thanks guys, I did not know about any of those details, and knowing that "First Runs only" is broken has saved me a lot of headaches and confusion.
I have put your responses in the hd.oztivo dot net page of S3WhatToDoAfterPromAndPatch06 (I'm too new to be allowed to post links) which seemed to be a good, central place for it.
I have a few other questions, that I can also add to the wiki:
- As I have to use "First Runs and Reruns", I presume that means I have no way to avoid getting repeats, so I am forced to manually inspect and delete them?
- I do notice some incorrect guide data, e.g. The TV series "Young Sheldon" being listed a on-off, so no season pass options, and then a movie "Maze Runner" being listed as a season, so had season pass options. And "Find Programs" by Movie, all types incorrectly lists a lot of TV series. I realise this is a community effort, so I wonder if there a way for the community to correct this guide data themselves (e.g. a Google Sheet), or is the best idea to email the developers, or PM you who can pass it on?
- I was starting to build a HTPC with MythTV or LibreELEC with TVHeadend - do they use the same source of TV guide data, so would they have the same mistakes sometimes?
Many thanks, Eric
