Rikkitic:

I am very impressed with your skill and the quality of your workmanship. Apology if this has already been answered, but what is the range?

Not a straight forward answer I'm afraid. It is capable of doing about 65km on a full charge. But that would be on a flat road and cruising at 50km/h the whole way and not using too much throttle. Realistically, with hills and the occasional quick acceleration away from the lights it's more like 45km if I only drain the battery to ~30%. Not draining the battery below 30% is the best to preserve its health.

I have a 30km cross Auckland commute that is possible to do by avoiding the motorways and staying on 50-60km/h roads. The battery won't get me there and back but I have just bought a 2nd charger that I will store in the office. I won't use it for that commute very often but when the weather is nice I will.

Great project. I bet it is a lot quieter and emits less smoke than the original.

Does it have a brake light?

Yes it has a brake light. Doesn’t show well in that video as I was riding into the sun.

There are no indicators however. My shoulders will get a good workout.

Here's a little clip from a quick spin around the local area this afternoon. I don't seem to be smiling too much in this video, probably concentrating too hard as the road was a bit damp and therefore a bit slippery. But it really is such a fun thing to take out for a spin.

I recently bought a pair of Sonos Era 300 speakers to use as surrounds in our HT setup. Currently there’s only one brand of floor stands available and they’re NZ$500+ a pair. Not only pricey, I don’t really like the look of them - so I decided to make my own.

The speakers are heavy so I needed the stands to be solid and well-weighted.

All the materials came from Bunnings and cost $170:

1x concrete paver 450x450x37 - cut to make two bases.

2x 25x900mm galvanised pipes, threaded at each end

4x 25mm galvanised flanges, tapped to match the pipes

2x packets of 4, M6 x 32mm countersunk SS bolts and nuts

1x packet of 4, M5 x 25mm countersunk SS bolts.

1x Flexovit circular saw abrasive disc for cutting aluminium plate and the concrete paver

1x aerosol can satin white spray paint

1x packet of 1/2” rubber grommets - used two.

Plus other consumables - primer, filler, sandpaper etc - which I had on hand. I also had some scrap 5mm aluminium plate from which I made two 90x120mm adapter plates to interface between the top flanges and the two mounting holes in each speaker.

I am pretty happy with the results - maybe not elegant but I like their semi-industrial, steampunk-ish look - however I am biased.

Was @sir1963 ‘s bad (or good) enough to warrant NBS being invoked? I guess it was. 😀

A tiny project. My three-year-old car has wired (unfortunately) Apple CarPlay - which I use a lot. I’ve tried all sorts of mounts - on-dash, clipped to the air-vent vanes, windscreen mounted, etc and none of them work properly for me, or aren’t secure enough - I don’t like any of them. Also not keen on the clutter of the phone around the dash and don’t really need to see the phone screen itself when AirPlay is in use.  OTOH I don’t like the connected phone just lying loose and flopping around down in the console.

So I made my own mount - using a strong Mophie magnetic holder that works with iPhone 14. The mount fits into the 12v outlet socket below the dash and the holder clamps securely to the mount. I had all the materials on hand:

  • 80mm of 22x22 pine, sanded to a 20mm dowel for 30mm at one end (to fit into the socket)
  • 100mm of 20x3 aluminium bar
  • misc screws
  • primer, filler, satin black aerosol paint
  • Mophie mount.

I'm guessing you mean this one? How did you get on with that? It's a very tricky DIY job IMO.

I found the shelves easily enough and cost effectively. The issue is finding the uprights and feet. I have sort of lost track of the project as I got busy on other things.
