I was just thinking this and then wondering how big a problem that would really be.....for starters I use Kagi for search (highly recommended btw) and Fastmail for email.....so am slowly leaving Google already. That leaves mobile phone and account history etc for things like YouTube.I paid for premium lite but they axed it...and the ads now is nuts...but it isn't worth $25+ for a family plan just to duck out on the ads....

It might be easier to just add a burner account to the Family group...and visit Pakistan.....

I've been doing this since ~2016 and using my main account. No problems with me and I use YouTube really heavily.

Same here, heavy user and never had a problem with using my main account since about the same time. I've had to move countries a few times in those years too as payment terms are updated.

I never bothered with any of this travel stuff because I didn't think it was worth the hassle, but now that YT has announced an 80% price hike to $18... I might have to give this a shot next time I'm traveling if none of the family has premium.

I have 6 in my family so I didn't have much of a choice about using my main account. I've been Turkish YouTube premium user for about 18 months now, so far no problems, finger crossed. I had google play music from its inception and ended up with free YouTube Red when that become a thing and I'm so used to not having the ads, YouTube is a lot more palatable without ads. But $18 for a single user is quite expensive, especially as they don't even produce much (or any?) of their own content, they used to but I don't think they do anymore. Crazy.

So no dice for me so far....

I tried several different ways to get this to work and while I could circumvent the whole "We cannot confirm your location" thing I always hit a credit card error with "Transaction declined. This purchase requires a payment method from your billing country."  I tried both a Wise card and a Revolut account....in all cases exactly the same error...but they we also both Visa-based cards and I have to wonder whether or not that is a factor....

Sigh.

Did you move the credit on your Wise card into the currency of the country you're buying in? eg using Pakistani currency to purchase in Pakistan?

I might try again later in the week when I have some time. I tried Pakistan, Kenya, and Ukraine....all got the same payment error. I did create a balance/wallet for Pakistan (clearly I was anticipating success) but I don't think this actually matters - Wise will pay in any requested currency and takes funds from whatever balance you have that provides the lowest cost option. The only real advantage of the currency wallets is to allow you to hedge funds when the exchange rate is favourable... to the receiver the incoming funds is always just the 'local' currency regardless of where it comes from....

I might need to try a non-Visa card....

I found Revolut works well (virtual card). I’m not sure if it gives anyone anything but here’s my referral if anyone wants to give that a go: https://revolut.com/referral/?referral-code=michaeldszy (free).

Have you created a payment profile on your Google account. I think it's called payment profile or something similar. I had to delete my old NZ one, made a turkey one, with the NZ em assy address, then travelled to Turkey via vpn and all went OK. Then I created an additional payment profile for NZ, and added my credit card back into my Google wallet, still works fine here on NZ.

FYI - looks like YouTube may be taking action against people using subscriptions from other countries.

Thanks for that - we've been using this trick for about 3 years now.

Will be expecting the email soon!
