About a year ago my friend had the same kind of message from TVNZ about his LG Smart TV which is about 8 years old now. He didn't want to buy a new TV because he is happy with the picture quality on the one that he has. I suggested that he buy an Apple TV 4K media player. He did, and I called round to help him set it up. He is really happy with it, and he has downloaded several other apps that wouldn't have played on his LG TV as well. The Apple TV has the added plus of no ads, unlike some of the Smart TV's which are littered with them.

Yes - This will be interesting. Those streams are also used the Freeview app. So I presume if they changed too much, maybe that would break as well?

Yes - This will be interesting. Those streams are also used the Freeview app. So I presume if they changed too much, maybe that would break as well?

Freeview Apk can leverage Widevine via Android so it might just need a minor update.

Actually thinking about this I'm a bit puzzled. TVNZ+ already uses widevine for protection of on-demand streams. The live streams are currently in the clear, but switching one or more of them to widevine shouldn't impact older TVs, unless they're having to move to a stonger version of Widevine which will take out older platforms.

Seems entirely reasonable from TVNZ, when they buy content they have to agree to certain protection requirements imposed by the company selling it. They may also shift VOD platforms every few years that might break old tv/app functionality but Smart TV's are not sold saying 'these included apps will work forever for you'.

People here have posted the best solution, AppleTV or a Chromecast(?) would likely fix this and allow you to keep the old TV.

"Kia ora Rochelle! We’ve added new copyright protections which prevent our streams from being illegally copied. Our rights holders require certain measures to prevent the piracy of their content. Unfortunately, the change that we’ve made to our service is currently not compatible with PS4 consoles. You won't be able to stream live sport, replays or watch simulcast for the time being. You can still watch TVNZ+ video-on-demand content as usual. We are working hard to resolve this and will keep you updated. Other end points including Chromecast will also continue working. Hope that helps!"

I don't think it is going prevent it. But it sure has a created a bit of inconvenience for people with these tvs having issues.

If ex-sparksport content is heading there, I imagine they want to beef up the offering to meeting requirements I guess.

I find it somewhat ironic that the only content anyone would ever really want to pirate from TVNZ would be local content, but these changes are being done to protect overseas content which is generally easy to find on pirate sites :-)

I really don't see the point when there are devices with an HDMI out that play the streams so you get the content anyway to do what you like with.

This is another splendid example of why "smart" TVs are a really bad idea.

The TV manufacturers have taken a consumer durable good (a TV set) with a reasonable life of ten years, and conjoin-twinned it with a tech fast-mover good (the smart bit) that comes from a background where three years is "old" and twice-yearly or more often updates are a security necessity.
Oh, and the TV manufacturers don't have a culture or an infrastructure or an income stream that will allow them to push out even semi-annual updates to millions and millions of smart TVs for up to a decade.

The result is already becoming obvious: Smart TVs that "don't work anymore" turning into e-waste while the TV part is still good for many years service, or smart TVs with their smarts unused and a newer and slightly smarter front end box - AppleTV, Sky pod / box, SmartVue, etc. - doing the smart bits, and being continuously upgraded if 'upstream' managed, or replaced every two or three years.

So...took peoples' advise and bought 4K Firestick with Alexa from Noel Leeming.

OMG what an improvement for my 7yr old Samsung !

Menu selection way faster, great home page which is very customisable. Very easy setup, and Alexa on the remote "an't too bad!"

Searching through multiple content streams excellent, with very little delay switching between providers - picture quality way better.

I'm sold..

I view the smart features as value add to the core function of a panel to display video. Like I said earlier, if people want a consistently supported experience for their streaming, then a set-top box is the only reliable way to get it.

I'm amazed at how many people see the smart features as part of the core functionality of a TV. I've never viewed a TV as anything more than a display panel. Always use a dedicated media player for source input and always use a dedicated audio system or sound bar for sound output. There are always compromises to be made when you try to make one box do everything.

The OP's experience is a prime example. The difference in user experience between the built in TV apps and a dedicated streaming stick is night and day. And this is a device that retails for $59 and can often be bought cheaper on sale.
