So I guess for me the benefit is its a bit faster and might possibly cope with HEVC better. So I probably don't need one. But I want one. But you don't neeeed it. But....

I have two of the newer models and both play all files I have tried via plex without any problems. Given they are the same price what's the issue? (or can you buy the gen 1 used or something)

I bought the Fire TV 2 during Black Friday and sold the 1 on TradeMe.  Zero cost upgrade.  I have noticed the 2 starts streaming IPTV streams in Kodi quite a bit quicker than the 1 but other than that it's much of a muchness.

Im looking at replacing my gen1, ive had it since launch. Have massive issues with x265 as it struggles with even 720p encodes, skipping back and forward several times for an hour show is annoying. Does anyone have any hints to gain a little more performance out of kodi, I have considered overclocking the ATV but havn't looked into it seriously. Replacing it with another firetv sounds like a straightforward procedure too so may go down that route yet

It's probably less than $150 shipped for the new model. I imagine in terms of time vs cost, it wouldn't make sense to try overclocking etc. You'll likely sell your current FTV for most of what you pay for the new one anyways.

Just do it and more on to more important things that are harder to sort :)

My 4k one came with it, but its pretty lame. the others still dont, So if you press the remote and ask them what 10 plus 3 is then it starts to want to search for movies instead.

Odd. I have an ATV gen one with Kodi, and have been streaming X265 720p files almost exclusively lately. They are great and apart from one movie that seemed jumpy when panning shots were shown, it's been fine. From memory, I actually found that setting the hardware acceleration off seemed to fix that particular movie as well. I would agree that turning acceleration off seems contra to the issue, but it worked. Can't recall if I re-enabled acceleration to be honest.

I will look into turning hardware acceleration off. I might need to update my Kodi as well, im not on the most current version. To be honest it has been fine lately, it was potentially just the series i was watching at the time that had the issue, maybe just a high bitrate as it was a full season release. Ive been watching a lot more of my regular weekly shows in x265 and those releases are fine so for the time being the itch to upgrade has gone

Some people seem to set some odd HEVC encoding parameters I think. I found one file that only VLC on my PC would play properly. Wouldnt say its necessarily the AFTV thats the problem - could be  KODI - worth trying to update the version of KODI - they are always tweaking things

Have anyone noticed since the last OS upgrade the Amazon Fire goes sometimes to sleep and won't come back on pushing remote keys? I had to unplug and plug it a couple of times to get it working.

I've not noticed that. I dont have the new 4K model though.

Is Alexa supposed to work "out of the box" as it were, or is there something that has to be set up first?

I ask questions into the remote but I dont get any answers.

Just push the button and ask once it has the update. Not all of mine have it still tho.

Do you have to ask in a special way? Do you have to say Alexa first or something?

No, just push the button and ask the sort of question it can handle, like what is 65 dollars in New Zealand dollars, what time is it in London.
