How are people going to be watching the Olympics via streaming? I was hoping to be able to use the BBC iplayer app on the Xbox 360 but it looks like they have a separate sports app that isn't available on the 360. I can probably still stream to the PC using my getflix subscription, but I'm interested in what other people will be using.

I'll be using the BBC sport roku app mostly.  And/or Ipad app (which I believe is chomecast compatible).

Wonder if Sky will do any FanPass specials?

I know their Olympic Pop-up channels wont be on FanPass.

If Sky have their way, (and the IOC) it's going to be harder than ever this year. 70% of the revenue to run the games is from media licencing 0.o

8K video, VR (where available), their own streaming player and limited FTA on local Brazil coverage (and limiting the credit cards accepted around venues!)

Hell, even TV and Fairfax have pulled out their photographers and videographers out of Rio due to Sky locking down what they can cover and how soon and how much they can show in media (read:no live or near live results or footage). If you read the media forms for 2016 they claim to be Highly invested in Geoblocking, Apples localised camera disablement, Streaming detection etc etc

Internet Monitoring In addition to monitoring the Games broadcasts around the world, the IOC also implements an Internet Monitoring Programme at each Games, which uses the most advanced technologies available to prevent, track and take appropriate action against violations, such as video infringements on any online or mobile platform or ambush marketing activities on social media platforms. The Internet Monitoring Programme also monitors geo-blocking, to ensure that rights-holding broadcasters respect their territorial rights online, as well as online advertising, news access and ambush marketing.

So no free-to-air coverage, even on Prime?

I presumed the Fanpass (sky sport 1-4) would have decent coverage, is this not the case?

Prime will have coverage, not sure what. Sky Sport 1-4 (and FanPass) will also have coverage.

"Sky will dedicate 10 pop-up channels to its “unprecedented” coverage of the Rio Olympics but only four will be in HD.

However, there will also be HD coverage on Sky Sport 3 and 4 as well as on Prime (from 11pm-3pm daily plus highlights packages and streaming on www.primetv.co.nz).

Closed captions for deaf and hard of hearing viewers will be available on much of Prime’s coverage, including the opening and closing ceremonies."

Commited to a percentage of FTA. But other than opening/closing potential. Usually not necessarily kiwi focused events, nor have to be live. (ala 7hrs of overnight highlights reels covers em)

And there you have it

Prime continues its proud tradition of offering comprehensive free-to-air Olympics coverage. With a mix of live events, highlights, the opening and closing ceremonies in full and all the medal moments you need, Prime’s will make sure all Kiwis have access to the very best of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics

Fanpass have already come out saying that only the normal sky sports 1-4 channels are covered, no pop ups, so that excludes that.

Skygo is the next best option, although quality is pretty questionable on a device bigger than an ipad (and ofcourse assumes you are a sky subscriber using your skygo access because you are temporarily away from your sky box)

Additional Room Decoder for a month or 2 may be an option if you have need for a family member "in the spare room" and ofcourse if will all hook up to the same satellite dish ;)

Original stuff story March 24.

Sky Sport would broadcast 13 channels of Olympic sports from Rio and would also provide 56 video feeds, all of which would be available on computers, phones and tablets through an app to Sky Sport subscribers, he said.

That'd be HD for Sky subscribers and SD for Freeview watchers.
