I must have been living in an alternative universe as I have just now been told off for having an ad blocker (Ublock Origin) when watching YT. I have been watching ad-free for years with no admonishments.

I turned off Ublock and found the ads intolerable and even suggestive (talk to the pretty lady and even see her pics for a price!).

Do all you YT watchers pay for the premium option?

you can just click the notification away after five seconds.
I don't feel guilty for having the adblocker on my browser as Youtube get enough advertising screen time into me when I am watching it on my TV

I use YouTube premium. I dislike advertising but believe creators deserve to paid for their work.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I have been paying for youtube premium for years. Creators need to be paid, I'm more than happy to help. If you are not wanting to pay or watch the ads to help pay then maybe that is just an issue you need to work out?

I will watch ads on creators I appreciate and watch a lot - they deserve to be compensated for their work. Generally pretty short ads.

I'll skip a long ad after about 20 seconds usually - I read somewhere that they still get something so long as you don't skip straight away. Could be wrong, but meh.

This is a mixed bag for me. YT premium is about five times what I'd consider paying for an ad-free version of a platform where you eventually get the content either way. But I have no problem with content creators getting paid.

What annoys me is when the ads are minute-long music videos or unreasonably long and unskippable relative to the content I'm watching. This seems to happen on lots of streaming platforms. 15 second ad on 10 second clip.

At the moment the thing pushing me towards having to pay is that my son watches YT on our TV (toy videos, Blippi etc) and will get ads interrupting them for charities operating in war-torn parts of the world - these ads are particularly confronting but thankfully he's young enough to not understand what he's seeing. But that's a pretty crappy reason to have to shell-out for no ads whatsoever.

I understand that contributers deserve to be paid but I wonder how YT distributes the monies paid to the content providers.

Also wonder why this lockout has just been applied after years of watching with no demands! Something just triggered it.

Not any longer. I got the delayed start, then allowed to watch 3 vids only, then no access now.

Anyways go into ublock orgin settings purge all caches, update and apply changes, restart browser. Might have to do this each day as a whack a mole war with google has begun.

There is a thread on reddit, that has the up to date countermeasures for youtubes anti-adblock.

📌 YouTube Anti-Adblock and Ads - October 16, 2023 (Weekly Thread) : r/uBlockOrigin (reddit.com)

My issue with the ads are that they are often for online gambling platforms and the most horrible adverts, over and over again, and at least on the TV app, they don't appear to be able to be changed

Issue I have with forcing me to see ads prior to content is that I have to sit through the poxy things before I can decide if the content is worth it. It's the same with websites that won't let you see their pages unless you turn off the adblocker.

Prove your value to me first then I'll let you have some reward. E.g. play 3 minutes of video then give me 15 seconds notice that an ad is going to be played.  If it's compelling enough I'll stick around for a minute or so while the ad is running.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

I have the family thing, so everyone in the family lives in an ad-free world, plus we all use YouTube Music. Money well spent IMO.

I have had YouTube Premium since they introduced it in New Zealand. I could happily ditch the other video services I currently pay for but would keep it no matter what (partly because I still pay $9.99/month as I have since the beginning). I get no ads, the creators get paid, and I also have access to YouTube Music if I need it. There are ways to pay less for it than I do if you search but I feel it is utterly worthwhile. No ads on any devices is wonderful.

I use Ublock Origin with all lists enabled + Privacy Badger + Vivaldi native blocking and have yet to see this annoyance. YMMV.
