my elderly neighbour is happier by the day - says can't wait to meet their maker.

i think it depends on one's belief system, on whether they are happy or fearful or otherwise.

eg in China they lockdown every time because they their belief of the afterlife is intensely negative.

in India death is accepted as a step towards reincarnation (which happens over and over again) https://www.google.com/search?q=india+reincarnation

neighbour is neither though, different belief.

MikeB4:

I think the press needs to dial down their nuclear war articles. It is irresponsible and will impact mental health.

Really? I grew up facing the Russian military a few hundred miles away, with nuclear weapons at airbases just down the road from my house and the PIRA blowing up pubs, buses and military targets regularly.

I don’t recall anyone ever much complaining it affected anyone’s mental health. It was just the way it was.

I’ll agree the articles are tedious but then so are most articles in what passes for the press these days.

I can’t help but feel that somehow a lot of resilience seems to have disappeared from the population at large.

I recall elderly (vaguely Christian) relatives telling me they were tired of life - and one even saying “I’ve lived too long!” Although she was 101 when she finally went to her reward.

I’ve no wish to go before my allotted time but the older I get, the more irritating and less sane the world appears to me. Perhaps immortality wouldn’t be as much fun as it sounds!

You should meet Sarah Palin. She can see Russia from her house!

Rikkitic:

I have reached the age where I feel like I am living on borrowed time. All around me people are dropping like flies - friends, musicians, actors, politicians - nearly every day someone I know, either personally or from the media, disappears from this life. Nearly all are my age or younger. I keep wondering when it will be my turn. As far as I know I am in good health, but that doesn't stop me from wondering.

I do wonder occasionally how any of us would know if another person here was to shuffle off this mortal coil. There are obviously people here who know each other outside of GZ and have regular contact, but for many, we'd simple cease to post one day, and that would be it.

I guess it won't be a concern of the departed.

Having been here a long time (geekzone) I have come to know many of the names here reasonably well (not IRL), if they don't post for a while, I usually PM them to check if everythings OK.

The world has become pretty isolated and isolating in many ways. People's views have become more defined and siloed, and there are so many ways to have an opinion voiced,  physical distancing is obviously much more of a thing. I think it's so important to have a connection to people regularly. Loneliness can really sneak up on you and also the feeling of being houseboud. You don't really notice it as it's such small increments.

So, harden up?

What you may be seeing is the effect that having literally everything suck is having on the population.

I don't feel that he is saying that at all.

No, quite possibly (probably?) not, it's just one interpretation. Either way, my comment stands. When everything sucks, it wears you down and your ability to tolerate anything is lessened.

It's something that I think society is going to start paying a heavy price for over the next few years.

Having said that, I also don't think there's an easy fix.

This month and last month has been particularly hard going. Some days are like today are hard to keep going.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I was thinking to other day that I had not seen Fred99 around for a while. I don't go near the Politics section since last year so figure it was due to that.

Just got back from a holiday in the South Island and it was good but I still feel like life isn't really going well for me. I'm not trying to make my situation into a pity party as I know there are heaps of people with things far worse than me, but I just wish things could be better.

Weather has such an impact on mood. Especially hard when living in Wellington and seeing Hastings 20 while we sit at 10 degrees with a freezing southerly that impacts doing much outside. Sun is so vital to wellness because it invites you to leave your shell.

Being bombarded with ugly news about war and climate makes me feel more vulnerable and introspection from too much information does impact health. I now skim and avoid stories that will upset me since the deed has past and knowing the morbid details won't change anything except add sadness.

I often think of the wisdom of Paul Gauguin the painter who quit the West to spend his final 10 years in warm, sunny Tahiti. You can see the bright colours in his paintings suggest the effect it had on him. Makes one wish it was easier to escape to a warm and uncomplicated place. Unfortunately when wisdom inevitably arrives late in life, so do the health issues that tie you to hospitals or family connections that can’t be broken.

When visiting remote islands which we did on a cruise a few years back most of the passengers commented how envious they felt of the simple joys and camaraderie of the locals and kids playing, no news or devices, warm sand and seas with abundant fish and few first world problems.
