Imo NZ has the expertise and technical base required for vaccine manufacturing. NZ should start doing this for the region and beyond.

Why.....

The production lines at CSL in Melbourne have capacity to produce up to 1 million doses of AZ per WEEK,  its currently producing a small fraction of that,,,,

As to why, mRNA vaccines are going to be the future, resulting in huge improvements in infectious disease control (and possibly more).

It would be interesting to find out what happened to the Gates foundation's 7 vaccine factories they said they were funding in April 2020
https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/04/bill-gates-7-potential-coronavirus-vaccines

especially that given that less than a month later Pfizer started their phase 1 trials of their mRNA vaccine

Taiwan has advanced independent vaccine effort, they might be uniquely open to alliances.

Early in pandemic as well as putting in place extensive PPE manufacturing, they prioritized vaccine development too.
Knowing well politics.

Tsai books Medigen shot, despite wait
THE HOME TEAM: DPP Legislator Kao Chia-yu said she canceled her booking for an AstraZeneca shot as soon as she heard that the Medigen vaccine was an option
https://taipeitimes.com/News/front/archives/2021/07/29/2003761650

First local vaccine batches ready: FDA
MEDIGEN: The Central Epidemic Command Center plans to wait until about 500,000 to 600,000 doses have passed testing before offering it in the vaccination program

Its subunit protein vaccine like Novavax.
Big Pharma have a huge advantage due to their experience doing large trials and dealing with FDA intricacies.
Probably why Novavax has had delays in getting USA approval, having a steep learning curve, but seem to be progressing none the less..

Not really. NZ has an highly limited capacity to manufacture in validated environments. Expanding that isn't easy or fast.

They may claim that they have capabilities but that doesn't mean they have capacity. I've been involved in building pharmaceutical faculties and it's not like throwing up a warehouse in Riccarton.

Tasmania has their first confirmed case in over a year - traveller from Sydney who somehow "escaped" and got to Tasmania via Victoria on a flight on Monday , was intercepted and quarantined as he didn't have the required pass - then somehow managed to skip quarantine to fly back to Sydney yesterday - before his positive test was returned.

Sounds like a complete debacle.

Dratsab:

Ha ha ha... that reminds me of this tshirt Glenn Fricker wore on his channel for a while.

Glenn Fricker on Twitter: "On sale till Sunday! Use the code FANFAVE and take 10% off! https://t.co/OgexawmXcH… "

That's something that annoys me too. All these new age Social Media internet-in-my-hand-makes-me-an-expert soapboxers. Most of them, over the age of about 22..

What does that mean? They need to go ask their Plunket for their vaccination card as there's the high probability their parents actually listened to doctors, didn't question them because Dr Google sounds smarter, and they're likely jabbed to the hilt. Yet suddenly with the advancement of tech and science compared to back then... it' suddenly a bad idea for them (and their children) now.

But then there is the risk they bring up the ChickenPox parties. Which you can go back with Measles wasn't such an issue before facebook and easily fed BS from about '92

Taking a leaf out of the Bitts book

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/exclusive-us-developing-plan-require-foreign-visitors-be-vaccinated-official-2021-08-04/

Wait for the uproar about 'rights' and 'Bill of rights' being trampled on. At least it's the end country and not the Airline that are going to cop it like early indicators and complaints were directing toward.

Now for people to realise there is a difference between a right, a choice, and a privilege. Shock horror. Not exclusive or the same.

"you can't stop me smoking outside, it's my right!". No, that's an un-natural choice. Consequence. "You can't stop me travelling", errr. That's a privilege, and there is a right of carriage refusal.

They won't care - it's for foreigners only.

Exactly...

Just like them fingerprinting all non-citizens entering the country, if they did it to locals all H#ll would break loose and there would be lawsuits flying left and right...

I am sorry but your post above came across quite click-baity when in fact the Reuters report was simply that, a report.
