GV27:

This is what is coming out Rotorua when a new one is proposed:

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/452023/we-ve-drawn-a-line-rotorua-rails-against-any-extra-miq-hotels

Rotorua mayor Steve Chadwick has said three was enough, as has the local Chamber of Commerce. They said it would take up space for the tourism industry, particularly when several other motels were being used for emergency housing.

The Lakes District Health Board has also said any extra facilities in the city would be a strain on its resources.

Māori Party co-leader and MP for Waiariki Rawiri Waititi said the region was being exploited.

As an Aucklander living under level three lockdown so other parts of the country can just get on with their lives, I have precisely zero sympathy for them.

100%. I like this bit. They said it would take up space for the tourism industry... /s

We need more hospitals now, Covid has only added to that need.

I agree, but

1. More hospitals is not an option as it cannot happen (quickly) Infrastrcture, the builds, import staff, train staff, thats a project for another decade.

2. We dont want more hospitals so we can care for more dying people. Vaccination helps that by a huge %.

The other option is close up NZ and stay in levels 3 and 4 for as long as it takes. Thats quite easy if you SHUT the border. But you can severely limit hospital beds AND deaths by vaccination. Thats doesnt mean vaccinate then carelessly open up. Open up with restrictions to control Covid to protect the hospital beds. If the latter are doing ok, ease up restrictions. My key is that hospital stays and deaths are massively cut back by vaccination.

The sooner we start on improved infrastructure, the sooner it's available. No reason to delay.

I agree. Our medical system operates at peak. We could double it, so the peaks we can manage easily and do more elective sooner, but who will pay for it as taxes are a no go.

@tdgeek covid is not the only reason we need more hospitals especially in the regions, our abysmal record with mental health is one example.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

And for this weeks changes (I've forgotten to keep up so these are only the recent ones)

Kayak fishing clarified in Sporting

The 50 limits removed and 100 limits left for activities.

Alert level 2/3/4 pages - Lots of pretty images added. And book your vaccine changed to 'Get your vaccine' (in light of walk-ins now available almost everywhere I guess)

Some clear-ups in lvl3 business around what trade can enter your home (excluding out cleaners to be support only)

Home cleaners can only work to provide support to vulnerable people — for example, disabled people or people with health conditions.

They keep changing and adding things. Do you think people keep track of this? I bet some home cleaners are working and nothing will change now.

Most likely not. Is why I find it amusing to note how much it does get massaged without any sort changelog or public notifications/updates mentioned during the pressers etc.

Just like 'cinemas' being removed from recreation while many of them in a single room aircon are operating with I doubt persons sitting for 2hrs masked (some have food services)

And no, cleaners are in hot demand, even down here in 2 land. So I expect someone was dobbed as a dumb idea sparking it.

AK unlinked and mystery cases need to come down to near zero and so does transmission at locations of Interest.

... until that happens I can't see Auckland getting to 2 (because to remove the 3 boundary will see it spread round the country)

Meanwhile those of us north of the bridge are really struggling to avoid the locations of interest:

The harbour bridge is an easy boundary, but where do you put the one out west? Not to mention there are a lot of people commuting from the shore to their jobs in the city in level 3 and they'd have to go stay at home again.

Fair point. Our hospitals run at capacity, but its not acceptable to have a larger health system as that costs money, which is either taxes or less spending on other things. Its a lose-lose for political parties which rely on taxpayer votes

Replace "health system" with "IT Infrastructure" or even your own Get thru bag and you have the same scenario, just on a smaller scale. We (from the individual to the largest groups of people) need to be prepared, have sufficient capacity / slack in the system & built in redundancy.

Well as it turns out it seems we don't need new hospital.

We just need a new health board. In fact we are getting 2.

I agree. Given that we cannot increase our health system by 50% overnight, what is your solution to save lives in NZ, in this pandemic?

By future taxes and/or by cutting back on spending. But if we choose to follow your economic advice, hospitals wont pop up overnight
