Kiwi traveller with measles visited Disneyland

A teenager who travelled from New Zealand to Southern California this month was infectious with highly contagious measles and may have exposed others at Disneyland and a nearby hotel, US health officials say.

The Orange County Health Care Agency said the exposures could have occurred August 11 at the Desert Palms Hotel in Anaheim and on August 12 at Disneyland and the Disney California Adventure Park.

The teen also visited Universal Studios, the TCL Chinese Theatres on Hollywood Boulevard (formerly known as Grauman's Chinese Theatre), Madame Tussauds, The Original Farmers Market, and Santa Monica Pier and Beach, the Los Angeles County health department said.

The girl remained in Southern California through until August 15 and has since returned to New Zealand, said Dr Nichole Quick, the county's health care officer.

The agency said it has been working with the facilities to reach people who had close contact. There are no current reports that anyone has contracted measles from the teen, Quick said.

She said she expects to see more measles cases, generally, among international travellers who visit California because of an increase in the illness overseas.

"We're in general concerned with the outbreaks going on in places in this country as well as internationally,'' she said.

The teen also travelled to nearby Los Angeles County. A message left for that county's health care agency was not immediately returned.

Disneyland officials on Friday said no employees at the theme park were reported to have contracted the illness. Dr Pamela Hymel, Disneyland's chief medical officer, said in a statement that health officials said the risk to employees and visitors "is likely low.''

The park boosted an existing immunisation programme earlier this year for employees, she said.

Disneyland and adjacent Disney California Adventure Park are major tourist destinations, drawing tens of thousands of visitors a day.

In 2015, a measles outbreak involving Disneyland sickened 147 people and spread across the US and into Canada.

As of early this month, Los Angeles County health officials reported 16 measles cases among county residents this year and 10 others among non-residents who travelled through.

Auckland Regional Public Health said on Friday there had been 616 cases in the region this year - up 109 cases since Monday - with the majority in the Counties Manukau area.

The Orange County health agency said people who may have been exposed should monitor themselves for symptoms such as fever and rash occurring up to 21 days from exposure.

Quick urged anyone who has symptoms to call their health care provider before going to the doctor to avoid additional exposures. People are also urged to check their records to determine if they have been vaccinated or previously had measles.

Who are "health care provider" if is not your doctor or ER. But wait you have to see your health care provider before going to the doctor.

Well I googled and typical of the USA and lets all dash off to: a durable medical equipment company or physical or speech therapist and don't forget "bill Shock" cause you will certainly need a "health care provider" for that.

Who Are Health Care Providers?

The health care provider you’re probably the most familiar with is your PCP or primary care physician. But there are all different types of health care providers. Any type of health care service you might need is provided by some type of health care provider.

Here are some non-physician examples of health care providers:

The physical therapist that helps you to recover from your knee injury
The home health care company that provides your visiting nurse
The durable medical equipment company that provides your home oxygen or wheelchair
Your pharmacy
The laboratory that draws and processes your blood tests
The imaging facility that does your mammograms, X-rays, and MRI scans
The speech therapist that works with you to make sure you can swallow food safely after a stroke
The outpatient surgery clinic where you had your colonoscopy done
The specialty laboratory that does your DNA test
The urgent care center or walk-in clinic in your neighborhood shopping center
The hospital where you receive inpatient (or in some cases, outpatient) care

The reason they want you to call first is so you don't bowl into the waiting room and sit there infecting everyone else in the room. The same protocols apply with other infectious illnesses.
Our local doctors get you to ring again when you arrive (but still outside) and they take you straight into the consultation.

Found this article: measles estimated death rate as is a high as 1 in 1,000, but more likely 1 in 2,300 (recent France, where there were a lot of anti-vaxxer, till law change)

Before vaccinations, a child was almost guaranteed to contract it, Similar to Chickenpox infectious.

Why Is Measles So Contagious?

An infected person who coughs or sneezes can spray the virus into the air in small droplets, which can remain suspended for up to two hours. People with measles are infectious for about four days before and four days after the appearance of the rash. Before there was a vaccine, nearly everyone in the United States became infected with measles before the age of 15. The disease kills about 1 in every 1,000 people infected, and those who survive have lifelong immunity.

A MEASLES OUTBREAK

In a hypothetical community where nobody has immunity from the measles virus, one infected person might infect 12 to 18 people, who might each infect another 12 to 18 people. At this rate, a small outbreak would quickly grow out of control.

THE HERD EFFECT

Every person who is successfully vaccinated reduces the potential sources of infection, thus reducing the risk to unvaccinated people. This reduction in risk is sometimes called the herd effect. The presence of vaccinated people helps slow the spread of the virus.

HERD IMMUNITY

For an outbreak to end quickly, each infected person must infect, on average, fewer than one other person. In this example, at least 17 of every 18 people (more than 94 percent) would need immunity. This threshold is sometimes called the herd immunity threshold.

To maintain herd immunity within a community over time, children need to be vaccinated at a high rate. The measles vaccine is ineffective in about 5 percent of people who have had only one dose, so two doses are recommended to ensure that nearly all children will get immunity before entering school.

“Despite an additional 57,000 MRR vaccines administered in the last 6 months, New Zealand has not escaped the outbreak of measles occurring globally,” Associate Minister Health Julie Anne Genter said.

“As of earlier today, there have been 762 confirmed cases of measles in the Auckland region.

“I want to reassure the public that co-ordinating the response to the measles outbreak will be a top priority for the Ministry of Health in the coming days.

“The Ministry has today activated the National Health Coordination Centre (the NHCC) to coordinate the response to the outbreak in Auckland and monitor the situation in the rest of New Zealand.

“The NHCC will work with Auckland’ DHBs and the Auckland regional Public Health Service and strengthen the response.

“People under the age of 50 , especially children, who have not been vaccinated, should seek a free vaccination from their doctor as soon as possible.

“Counties Manukau DHB has opened three outreach centres in South Auckland where people can go to get free MMR vaccinations.

“Free vaccinations are available in the following locations in South Auckland over the coming weekend:

Free Church of Tonga, Mangere, Saturday 31 August, 9am-3pm
Middlemore Hospital Emergency Department, Manukau, Daily
