Yeah, It's pretty incrediable.

It seems we have passed the peak in case numbers, and the reproduction number is now solidly below one.

Might be some seasonal impact on top of vaccination impact. Weather is now pritty warm.

And all this despite the likes of retail, schools etc opening in Auckland, and a general decline in rules compliance.

I wonder if (lack of) public transport is helping us here in NZ.  We're constantly being reminded of how poor our PT infrastructure is, in the context of climate change etc.  And yet, crowded buses and trains would seem an obvious spreading ground for COVID.  Maybe our entrenched private car culture is reducing the R number.

Likewise a lot of urban sprawl in NZ vs very high density living in some parts overseas. But it is also summer so more people out and about. I think their climatic conditions are working in our favour a lot at the moment.

This article reinforces my thoughts on why rural New Zealand lags behind in the the vaccination stats.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standard/manawatu-top-stories/300465976/urbanrural-divide-realised-in-vaccination-numbers-says-federated-farmers

  • Isolation

    • Lack of ready access to a local vaccination centre.
    • Lack of incentive as the virus isn't close by.

The vaccination roll out wasn't designed by people who relate to the lifestyle in the rural areas. There is no public transport and a lot of rural people go to town only once or twice a month or even less in some cases and if those days don't align with a vaccination centre being open then they don't get the chance to get vaccinated until the next time they're in town.

Yes this^. We don't have a vaccination centre in my town, and so need a car to get there as public transport isn't good either.  But some DHBs appear to be giving away $100 prezzie cards , so that is quite an incentive.

Staying in rural Otago:

Oh dear. How sad. Never mind.

My initial thoughts were bummer, that's a great stop for work trips. However, reading the article made me think the same as you. Compounded when I saw the comment about government handouts. The owner certainly makes it clear as to the type of person they are.

As in, "someone I wouldn't want to associate with, ever"? That's what I was feeling when I read her comments.

More like someone so deep into their own world that HBO might make a series about it. I'd be rather concerned about eating at a place that rebelled against health measures based on science, similar science is the reason we wash our hands when preparing food after all.

We have frequented the cafe many times, always great coffee and possibly the best nachos I have eaten but… As a former business owner you put your name on the door and run a set of values which you live by but this way out of kilt  given the pandemic we are facing. Their call but they also do really nice coffee at Nichols in Cromwell so that’s where we will be going in future.

Sup:

Today's daily figure is remarkably low hey.

Quite stunning the impact of the Vaccine wall is having against Delta. We have been at this for a very long time, we have clearly outrun the first Delta wave, and with Omicron coming perhaps...well probably....we may end up the only country to see off Delta without any real discernible stress on the hospital system.

I don't want to let hubris get ahead of myself here, Aucklands population are about to flood the nation in the annual JAFA spawning run.

However, lets also bear in mind that there is no law against people continuing to join the Vaccine wall. We may yet outrun the Auckland migration too.

Agree, but bear in mind, for every positive post here there are MANY naysayers. Everything we do here is shite. But you get that. I feel we are doing well. Slow? Maybe but we can get the learnings from those countries that didnt care. In any case IF we do VERY well, expect the usual run of negative posts. And thats all good.

On the vaccinations side, first dose numbers are still holding up above 6,000 a day. Which is great.

I guess thats the human element, governed by carrots. But who cares, if many more are jumping onto the train. While "for some" its inconceivable that we are doing well, we are. I was talking to someone from Waiheke Island today, she said its ok, she appreciated the response but its hard. yes, I agreed, its like the Govt/MoH asking who is angry and who is less angry. The bottom line is that there is no happy vs angry result. Its the lesser of two evils. Businesses can do stuff soon, populous can get out and about, its moving forward. And for a prominent and affected poster here, no thats not ideal, but there seems little choice. I hope he knows I am referring to him. And caring.

I get that, and I supported your post. BUTTTT is getting a jab any different from getting gas, weedkiller, groceries? Sorry, but if I was rural, and I have been, time it for everything so you can get everything. These days I dont feel there is an excuse. Like "hesitant" if any are hesitant now, they are anti vaxxers.

If its not that important, don't bother. There isn't a 18 nanosecond window to fit into. Sorry, #handfeeding

Not sure about anybody else but I'm seeing a slight shift online. Where only mentioning the framework or vaccines triggered people IE vocal AVs.

I've seen multiple community-level businesses announcing that due to the announcements yesterday they have to change and enact the framework on Friday. To resounding silence. You get the odd angry face or emoticon. But no crazy propaganda. I wonder if there's a bunch of them that realise they aren't actually going to make a change.

That their freedumbs aren't the same as our freedoms

Agree. Non scientifically, we are heading to 94% fully vaxxed. The remainder seem HUGELY vocal despite the miniscule %. Squeaky Wheel Syndrome. 94 vs 6

They say the flu is as bad. Ok. In lockdowns flu was almost non existent, yet we have list 5 million WITH lockdowns. I have a couple of close of anti vaxxer mates, Im getting close to calling time. One of our troop will soon be. I hope its divisive. 94 vs 6, the latter can stay in Alert level 3

My pain is when it's family members who are anti vaxx or hesitant. I know my sister is very antivaxx, hell she was even before coronavirus came along. There's no way in hell she would ever get a vaccine.

Of course, if she caught it she'd be the first one in line at hospital trying to get help. Sigh.

Thats tough. I have a couple of mates that may well end. But thats not family, its easy to take the high road, but with family thats not great.

Take care.

i just choose to ignore it.

people choose to smoke, drink, cannabis, burn plastic in their woodburner, hurt other people for fun (eg legal bully/prejudice/harrass/etc).

some choose to not vaccinate.

it's fine to curse and whine about them, but that's as far as i'll go.

in school we were taught you can be whoever you want to be, do whatever you want to do, and nobody can stop you. and suddenly this is a problem. syntax error sorry.
