Geektastic:

My wife was admitted to hospital with a pulmonary embolism (well, actually several) on Friday so this past weekend has been a pretty stressful experience for her as it is usually me that is in hospitals, not her.

Turned out to be quite stressful for me too as I am unused to seeing it from the visitor's chair.

They allowed her home this afternoon so she is pleased to be back in her own bed and sleeping without the hospital disturbances. I did offer to wake her at 0500 and do her BP etc but oddly she declined my offer.

I think this week will be a combination of getting over the shock of all that and adjusting to the new way of things for her - she has to take tablets every day now just like me (although only one compared to about 14 for me...!).

Just for a moment there I thought I would be reaching for her life insurance policy, which was sobering.

That is a truly stressful time for you both. I hope all goes well and she is up and about soon.

Glad she is home @Geektastic. One reaches an age where just like the weather forecast, mortality is always like a hovering cloud ready to send down showers, but thankfully the forecast is often wrong.

A stint in hospital makes you realise the importance and pleasure of the simple comforts of home and just being with your loved ones. May it last for many more years.

Thanks all.

She is well enough and has managed a few simple work calls this morning. Her boss sent her flowers too, which was nice.

As Chief Nurse, I had to administer her Clexane injection this morning; you would have thought I had stabbed her with a screwdriver rather than a needle you can barely see given the fuss!! I have to do those to myself when I am on it. Fortunately only 4 more of those to do and then she is on tablets.

I have urged her to rest as much as she needs to but I may need to be firmer in my exhortations in order to overcome her puritan work ethic!

One thing I will say is that we read a lot of complaint about our health system here in NZ and from the experiences of people I know who work in it, the administrative/management side is pretty poor.

The clinical side of it has exceeded my expectations on every occasion that I have interacted with it, however. We are very lucky to have such clever and hard working people to look after us when things do not go according to plan.

Being horrifically needle-phobic, I am on her side. You're a beast! 😃

Sorry to hear that and wish her a quick recovery, and hope you can cope well with your own issues as well as those of your wife.

Once off the injections and on tablets things can get better quite quickly.

I had the same happen to me, what they start to do is a lot of tests to see if there is any trauma that could have caused the pulmonary embolism.

I have to take Warfarin every day; when I have to have surgery, I have to come off it because they do not want you to bleed out on the table. They use Clexane instead because each injection lasts only 12 hours so timed right, it has worn off just as you arrive for surgery.

I have to do those injections for a week prior. To myself...!

Thanks; I have broad shoulders so I am sure all will be well once the initial shock wears off.

Good to know that she will get better soon - thanks. I will pass that on.

Yes they mentioned the C word and have asked her GP to carry out a full set of tests although they noted that they could see no evidence of anything like that.

I feel her pain but remind her there’s always something worse. My husband had to administer Clexane into my stomach every day for a whole month. He has a tremor and hated doing it so sometimes there would be a couple of failed attempts, wobble wobble. That needle was so long.

Feeling a bit wobbly again today - along with the well-documented house restoration issues, we also have a couple of other things going on this week that have just made life a bit more difficult...

Eldest son's 18th birthday - unable to have any of his friends around as the house is a wreck - feel like we are letting him down, as we can't really celebrate it in the way we would want to. We've been so preoccupied with the house and wife's upcoming redundancy that it's really felt like it was almost an afterthought - I just feel for him, as there's no excitement or buzz...and we're a family that loves to celebrate birthdays!

Add to that, our wonderful little pooch has just started urinating blood. Vet says it's on the scale of "quite a lot of blood in the urine" and has booked him in with a specialist for an ultrasound. He's been up at his "grandparents" while the destruction/construction goes on,  but he's with me today and seems quite out of sorts. Hopefully it'll be something less serious like a urinary tract infection. I don't even want to contemplate the alternatives.

Not a great time to be getting stung with thousands of dollars worth of vet and specialist bills. Thank the overlords that we have pet insurance. Just hope he's covered for everything we need.

Oh and did I mention that work is crazy busy right now? [grumpy face]

Just to make my wife feel better, the end of year accounts were just filed and the provisional tax on money she had yet to earn is enough to buy a nice car.

How you can be required to pay tax on money you do not have and may never have strikes me as about as unfair as it’s possible to make tax.

Yeah I am with you there. I've never understood the fairness of provisional tax.

GST Ratio method may be for you ...

GST Ratio Method
This method is suitable for taxpayers whose income
varies or who have seasonal income. You must be
registered for GST and file on a one-monthly or two
monthly basis. Under this method, provisional tax is
calculated based on your GST return.

https://www.ird.govt.nz/income-tax/provisional-tax/provisional-tax-options/ratio-option

Personally I used to ensure I always slightly over paid tax, and used my savings to buffer out the timing difference. I realise that is not always an option though.

It is surprising how quickly one gets used to self injecting. I have to self inject several times a month with a combinations of pens and needles and it just does not bother me at all. When things are too bad my wife is very proficient at giving the injections pain free.

I agree; I have to do one with an auto injector pen every week and it is simple as. I did learn to let it get well up to room temperature first (it lives in the fridge) because it stings like a *&^%$$$$ if you do not!
