The **** are in place of the name of the firm. The amount of effort these people are putting in to keep computers and staff free from viruses is hard to fault and I wonder if other places would be this conscientious? Because of all the effort to eliminate COVID-19, this year's flu season mightn't be as bad as last year's one. I would be interested to hear of the steps other businesses are taking to keep COVID-19 away from their employees and the public.

Yes - but at this stage don't look at increase in detection of "imported" cases in the same way as similar day by day exponential increase in cases from local transmission elsewhere. We may still be able to avoid what's happened elsewhere.

Yep, I am looking for this to drop away quickly in line with with arrivals if this is import-driven.

No evidence of CT as of this morning.

Yes - but at this stage don't look at increase in detection of "imported" cases in the same way as similar day by day exponential increase in cases from local transmission elsewhere. We may still be able to avoid what's happened elsewhere.

While it is great that most cases have overseas links, we should not be complacent because of this.

We don't really need to worry about the confirmed cases, these will be be well managed (assuming our medical resources arn't overloaded).

What is worrying is that exponential growth of confirmed cases from overseas, is likely linked with a corresponding growth of undetected cases, an issue which will not show up for two weeks.

I like the change of terms from social distancing to physical distancing.

I also like that other organisations like council facilities & universities are closing or moving online.

[edit] - also really good to hear that we have onshore mask manufacture, with a decent capacity. I had no idea about this.

The Government has allocated $100 million to help redeploy workers affected by the economic impact of COVID-19, with the hard-hit region of Gisborne-Tairāwhiti to be the first helped, Economic Development Minister Phil Twyford, Forestry and Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones and Employment Minister Willie Jackson announced today.

Phil Twyford says COVID-19 is having a significant impact on workers throughout New Zealand. “Nowhere more than on forestry workers in Tairāwhiti.

“Our Government is moving quickly to help people stay in work through a $100 million package which will see workers redeployed into local alternative employment for the next three to six months. Of this funding, $28 million will go to Tairāwhiti to help redeploy almost 300 workers.

“Forestry was one of the first industries to be seriously impacted by COVID-19 but by keeping the infrastructure and workforce of the sector intact, we hope it will be one of the first to recover,” Phil Twyford said.

Alternative work identified for Tairāwhiti forestry workers includes:

local roading work, including road maintenance
hazardous tree removal
fast-tracked One Billion Trees projects
conservation activities
retraining and educational opportunities.
The Tairāwhiti package will be administered through the Provincial Development Unit in partnership with the Mayors’ Forum and Gisborne District Council. Affected workers will be referred via the Ministry of Social Development’s Rapid Response Team and affected businesses.

“A significant portion of the Tairāwhiti economy is linked to forestry, which accounts for 6.7 per cent of regional GDP,” Shane Jones says.

“The sector was just recovering from a slow-down over last winter. Many small firms used their cash reserves to get them through that and some companies are now struggling to survive.

“However, the future for the forestry sector is extremely bright and we want to ensure it is in a position to recover from the economic impacts of COVID-19 as quickly as possible. By redeploying workers to short-term projects, we can help ensure they are available to go back to the forestry sector once it returns to normal,” Shane Jones says.

“I want to thank the forestry sector for working with the Government to find solutions to support workers.”

Willie Jackson says the package for Tairāwhiti includes training, transport, administration, assurance and other project-related services.

“Our Government will be constantly reviewing all its measures to soften the impact of COVID-19 on workers and businesses. We want to make sure the help we are providing is getting to those people and businesses who need it the most,” Willie Jackson says.

Nobody is complacent. There are roughly 30 flights into AKL today, I didnt look at WLG, CHC, Hamilton if they have any, Queenstown. Thats probably close to 7000. We seem to be in an import phase. These maybe the last flights in before the latest border measure? If so, a few days to go before they are all part of thr results

Its not exponential. Well it is, but its exponential due to flights not so much due to spread, although that will account for a small amount.

We don't test every person. Its wrong to see the increasing numbers are fails, its not a measure of MoH success or failure. As these people brought the virus in. More infections more people = more infections here. It all happenned outside of NZ, nothing to do with us. No idea why see these these numbers as reflecting on us

What matters is that A) they got nabbed, B) they arent spreading wild in the community yet

The number of NZers overseas at any given time is far higher than 80,000. From memory there is something like 18% - 20% of our citizens/residents overseas at any given time. There's hundreds of thousands in Australia alone living on SCVs.

The 80,000 figure is so small it could only represent short term departures. If you say that's less than six months, there would easily be 80,000 across Europe, NZ and Aus combined.

We have approx 600,000 NZers living in Australia alone, which is over 10% of the population. So I am guessing the 80,000 the Deputy Prime Minister referred to is people overseas on holidays or extended trip eg.gap year. He knows what he's talking about. Unlike Trump.

I suggest people watch the Bill Gates doco on netflix. He is doing great work. We need more rich people like him giving back to better the world.

they are now doing a 1000 tests a day and they got 11, all from overseas , dont panic yet.

and masks are overrated unless you have the virus. I watched a woman today who had one on walking around the supermarket, every few feet she would rub her mask and then push her hair up off her face.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Out of those 600,000, how many also have Aus citizenship?

There's been pressure on NZers living as permanent residents to apply for citizenship for a couple of decades and you don't have to revoke NZ citizenship to do so (unless you want to become an aussie MP LOL). Some won't qualify though. Most NZers I know who live in Aussie became citizens / dual passport holders years ago.

If this goes on for many months, then NZers living there without Aus residency/citizenship could find themselves to be in very deep trouble with no access to benefits etc.

I've seen these kinds of numbers before in "job-creation schemes". It seems an extraordinary amount of money for little result. There must be a whole bunch of ticket-punchers and consultants and project managers feeding at this trough.

Why not just give each worker $100,000 and tell them to come back next year? And give me $200K for thinking of this.
