I have a question about exposure risk and would like to know what people think. I am not asking for medical advice.

I am elderly, 77 years and my doctor has said I have COPD, though I don't have major symptoms and I have never used the inhalers he prescribed. I am otherwise reasonably healthy, not on any medications and  I keep active doing undemanding chores outdoors. I am fully vaccinated and boosted.

I live on a rural property and have little contact with others, except once a fortnight or so when I go to the supermarket. However, I am facing the prospect of having to attend several  events soon that involve significant numbers of people. I feel a strong sense of obligation to people I am close to and I don't want to let them down, but I am concerned about Covid exposure risk in regard to my age and condition. So how worried should I be? The events are a birthday, a wedding, and yes, a funeral.

Your exposure risk obviously increases greatly by attending any large social gatherings, especially where drinking is involved as social distancing goes out the window (even if you aren't drinking, others will be). No-one could tell you how you'd cope with Covid if you did get it though.

Since your age and COPD put you in a higher risk group I'd hope no-one would hold it against you if you chose not to attend some (or all) events.

I can only tell you about my experiences of the last 2 years.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. That is also the kind of thing I am looking for. How risky is it, really, to be in a group? How bad will it be if I do get Covid? How bad is getting hit crossing the road? It is hard to assign values to these kinds of things. I am trying to figure out where the balance points are.

Here's an easy way to think about the risk: How would you feel driving everywhere without a seatbelt on (and no airbags or similar in the car), or never washing your hands? Chances are nothing much will happen, but many (most?) people would feel profoundly uncomfortable doing it.

Not living ones final years to the fullest because of Covid is like standing in front of an ice cream shop on a stifling hot day and only being served the cone. It’s living in fear of something which may or may not ever affect you.

Remember when flu was the annual fear and we were told each winter we must be vaccinated because we may DIE of influenza. Well this is the new influenza with extras and in my mind we vax, mask and get on with it.

My take on it is to assess each situation's risk and make a decision at the time. We also have a wedding to go to in April, full of young people so the risk is higher and it’s assumed cases will be worse by then. It’s family so difficult to refuse to go. We will wear our masks...ask to be seated at an oldies table where we have less exposure to the young who circulate more. We won’t stay too long and will enjoy distance watching.

Death is an unavoidable part of our lives. We are at the point where many friends have already passed away, so each day is now a gift, but, the country needs to open up so the young can survive and get on with their lives and the economy can revive because if we keep wrapping ourselves in cotton wool and living in closeted fear to protect the vulnerable minority, soon we will be the forgotten country down there near Antarctica that ships and planes won't deliver goods to and that will impact every one of us far worse than any pandemic.

Take sensible precautions and live each day fearlessly doing whatever sparks joy.

Waiting for the test results is horrible. I am trying to work but my concentration is minimal. Symptoms have not worsened since yesterday.

That’s a positive if symptoms are stable. Maybe take it easy and watch or listen to something distracting for today. This too will pass.

I have been trying to write a bunch of Job Descriptions since 5am this morning and end up just starring at MS Word on my screen.

If we had been up with the rest of the civilised world we would have RAT tests you could have used at home and had a result within minutes.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. People talk about quality of life. I am concerned about quality of death. I want to die in my sleep, or from an accident I don't see coming, not desperately gasping for breath I can't catch.

Can we do anything to distract you? Would you like to hear some stories about my cats?

Nothing is ever as bad as what our active mind imagines, night time being the worst for this. Working yourself up won’t change any outcome and most likely your worst fears are unfounded. After recovering, I often got cancer brain when every twinge including an itchy elbow was cancer returning, but distraction works well and life returns to normal, as likely will your anxiety.

I would suggest getting out of the house. Get someone to drive you somewhere where there are a lot of people walking around, turn on talk back radio and sit in the car and people watch. I go shopping, works a treat.
