Technofreak:We have successfully eradicated MBovis etc yet we seem to be flailing around when it come to Covid-19
Just read through the last 15 or so pages of posts in this thread.
The reaction to dogstar001's posts are over the top and in some cases hysterical. He was not abusive, not trolling, simply presenting a different perspective in a reasoned manner. And then got banned for it.
I fully support the lockdown, think it will last longer than 4 weeks, and reluctantly accept that too. I support the Government and its actions, and happily call out fake news and BS.
Talking about the economic impacts of the lockdown, how it affects different age groups and discussing the pros and cons of the course of action is normal and should be accepted in a functioning democracy. I don't necessarily agree with dogstar001's position but the fact he got banned for having a different opinion which rarked up a select few seemingly older members is an absolute joke.

Jesus ***** Christ, are you really this nasty or just lack the capacity to think? The restrictions are relatively minor -- people who have lost jobs/income are getting unprecedented support -- and this is occurring against a background where the relatively low sacrifices are protecting people of all ages, including the young and vulnerable with existing conditions - from serious illnesses and death. The long term consequences (beyond health issues) of letting COVID-19 run wild could also be beyond measure. On any mainstream ethical framework, especially bearing in mind the broad-based community support for such measures, they are justified.
Stop arguing.
Rikkitic:
Sorry but this is an idiotic argument. I am 75 with a lung condition but I still enjoy my life and it is the height of self-important stupid blind arrogance to make the kinds of statements about me and others like me that you are making.
Apart from that, and the fact that your dumb assertion about the value of elderly lives really pisses me off, your logic is also stupid. According to the best current information, young people who develop severe cases of this disease quickly turn into old people, with compromised breathing, brittle bones and failing organs. Just the people you seem to think are expendable because they have already lived such long and happy lives. Except there is a fair chance that youthful party animals who recover will no longer have much of either.
These kinds of posts show the hypocricy.
I'm sure I paid more than $1 for Home and Garden in the past. Looks like I was overcharged!
I think the vast majority of the public can see through Bauer's BS and trying to blame the government for their poor management of an already failing business..

Sounds like a racist joke to me.
Not at all. If you’re not sure, look up the definition of racism.
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

What hypocrisy are you referring to, specifically? I can't and won't speak for others, but am happy to defend what I said. The post was obnoxious and insulting to old people, and maybe some other things as well. It was suggesting that letting old people die as a price for letting young people party (yes, I am exaggerating here) is acceptable. It is not.
Apart from that, it was based on an ignorant assumption that young people are not harmed by the virus. I pointed out that this is incorrect according to the latest information. At least some recovered young people suffer major permanent damage. Maybe all of them do but it just isn't known yet. I stand by my comments.

Kia ora,
Thank you so much for putting yourself forward to help assist with New Zealand's COVID-19 response.
I have been touched by the huge number of health and care workers who have signed up through our portal at this early stage.
Over 7,400 people have registered their details so far. We've got our first requests from employers, so now we're starting the process of matching the right people to the right roles as a top priority.
This means that if we need people with your skills in your area, you'll start hearing from us soon. If you don't end up hearing from us, at this point this is a good thing, as it means that there are enough people to handle the COVID-19 response in your area.
If you know anyone else who may be able to help with the COVID-19 response, please send them this signup link so that they can register their details here.
Please stay safe and look after yourselves and your whanau.
Kia kaha,
Dr Ashley Bloomfield
Director-General
Ministry of Health
Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Agree. Unless you discuss all of the options available then everyone just heads in the same direction.
dogstar001's post was what I had been thinking, but I believe they just put it out there in the wrong way. Yes, we need to start thinking about what happens if we do not wipe out COVID-19, how long we stay in lockdown and how we transition out.
Its good to see that these discussions are now happening at a political level. Not having a 'Plan B' right now is not an issue, as we have only finished week 1 of 4. I would hope that the government has plan b sorted by this time next week.
I also like the hypocrisy of some posters here accusing dogstar001 of ageism and then saying 'young people are causing issues' . Isn't that ageism as well? Isnt it only a small number of young people, therefore it would be more accurate to keep on saying some people are just idiots. Young people I know are not causing any issues at all.

Lighten up. It is an amusing play on words. Nothing insulting or racist about it at all.

The ethnic origin of person and/or their products that they were allegedly hoarding is also morally irrelevant and, for that reason alone, the gratuitous reference to "Hispanic" was unnecessary and inappropriate. But you feel free to carry on with your little crusade.
Looks like our Police Commissioner has been very mild in response to those breaking the lockdown.
