The OS on my phone can run most Android apps but won't run the MoH NZCovid app, it crashes every time. In the end I downloaded the Rippl app but so far it has failed to scan the Covid QR codes. I though it was supposed to be able to scan them.

Yes, still running Sailfish.

What else fails? Nothing else that I've found out of the apps I have wanted to use. Some apps like Sports Tracker which says it requires Google Play Services to work, but that even runs with the one minor irritation. I run several Android app quite happily. Opera browser which scans QR codes no problem, Here Maps, Sports Tracker, WhatsApp, the Spark App, MS Excel, Fitbit.

Guessing this is the aforementioned google analytics or API tie-ins coming in to play for non certified stuff..

Yes, still running Sailfish.

What else fails? Nothing else that I've found out of the apps I have wanted to use. Some apps like Sports Tracker which says it requires Google Play Services to work, but that even runs with the one minor irritation. I run several Android app quite happily. So is the same argument as Dave Lane as he refuses to use the Play Store.

Yep I understand that, though I do wonder why some developers can make an app that will run in the Alien Dalvik environment quite happily and other ones don't.

However my question was around whether or not Rippl was supposed to be able to scan the MoH QR codes. I have found out this answer via other means.

While the Rippl app would run there was no way to get it to scan for some reason. 🙁

Based on my experience with other Android apps I had every expectation that the NZCovid app would work (and for that matter the Rippl app)as I have just updated the phone which runs Android 8 in Alien Dalvik. My old phone was only capable of supporting up to Android 4.4 and one by one Android apps were starting to fail. I was surprised/disappointed to discover it didn't work initially on the new phone.

I re-downloaded the NZCovid app last night and now it works, including scanning QR codes. 👍

One feature that the Rippl app has which I think would be useful on the Covid app is the option to have a check out time rather than only the check in time you get with the NZCovid app.

The idea is to alert as many potentials as possible. That means focus on the place they went. And narrow down the time frame and potential exposure to others later

The elderly seem to think re-scanning using the govt app it is helping them 'logout'. When infact f someone spends 3hrs somewhere. When a positive case reports they were there for only 3mins an hour after that person left. They have put themselves back into the 'arrival from now' timeframe by scanning their leaving time.

The app can't tell the difference. But they would broadly advise first to be cautious. And then I suspect send a follow up and send it to those who scanned in the timeframe of the persons visit and after.

How recently was it updated? I only tried the initial install a couple of days ago.

I doubt very much that false impression is just restricted to the elderly. I can see why people might think this way especially if they've had prior experience with something like Rippl.

I know the NZCovid app doesn't work this way but having a log out function makes a lot of sense.
