It's interesting to look back on the official statements from organizations we should trust according to TV1 news.

For example, Boris Johnson went to hospital as a precaution, was admitted to ICU as a precaution said UK's NHS. Now, Boris says, it was touch and go, and he's lucky to be alive.

And the Rosewood rest home residents admitted to Burwood just as a matter of convenience, according to the MoH. They were receiving ordinary care, the same as if they were at the home. And now they're dying, one after another.

The information we're getting is being "managed".

Just like the WHO were recommending that international borders should stay open, at exactly the time when they should have been slamming shut in order to contain the spread of this.  I still can't understand why they said this.  There are so many hidden agendas and unspoken arguments.

Only the paranoid have nothing to worry about.

What is more likely is that the statements were true at the time they were issued - that they were admitted as a precaution and then got worse.

There certainly are, but you're in the wrong forum for this. Could I suggest Fox News instead? Or Infowars if you really want to hear about all the hidden agendas.

Hmmm... I didn't at the time and still don't believe anyone is admitted to ICU unless they are seriously, life-threateningly ill.

I wondered about the Rosewood one. I guess at that age, with other issues, it wouldn't take a lot to be too much. Possibly may have passed now or soon anyway, and even a mild infection is too much. Thus, I don't read too much into that. Boris though, as you say seems odd. He would have got PREMIUM care. From what I gather it can take serious cases many weeks to recover. He seems well recovered now.

Take your choice:

1) ICU low care = monitoring, non-invasive ventilation (NIV), no organ replacement therapy.

2) ICU high care = monitoring, invasive ventilation, organ replacement therapy. Complete intensive medical therapy options.

3) ECMO = ICU high care plus extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

For 2) and 3): one need to be anesthetized. 2) is serious. 3) is the last hope.

I've seen that in a number of conspiracy-theory articles that people have forwarded to me. One of them began with "WHO repeatedly lied to us about ...". First of all anything phrased like that isn't reporting information, it's selling you an agenda, but in any case if you followed the reference what the WHO said was dated either late 2019 or January 2020. Damn that WHO, they just ignored what their time machines were reporting and never told us in December 2019 what was going to occur in April 2020.

If anyone of you believe on any "theory" (I won't even list the types, you know what I am talking about) - please let me know so I can lock your account out of here. And also, don't post/spread bullshit.

I think there is no doubt the information is managed.

Take the wearing of face masks.

I don't think the general wearing of masks, particularly some models, will necessarily prevent you from being infected, due to the filtering ability and not being fitted properly, however I think there is no doubt they help prevent the spread of the infection from anyone who may be infected.

The message on whether or not the general public should wear masks appears to be directly related to the supply of masks in that jurisdiction. Where masks are scarce the message seems to be the masks are of no benefit, apparently on order to preserve the supply of masks for those people like doctors nurses etc. Where masks are in plentiful supply the message is that the general population should use them.

You seem to have misunderstood me @neb. Either that or you made a rather clumsy attempt to be snide and condescending but I'll assume its the former given this is a civilised forum for open debate.

To be clear, I have no time for conspiracy theories and I've never knowingly read Fox News or Infowars, I'll leave those sites to you.

But, I am genuinely puzzled as to why the WHO issued guidance as late as mid March that closing international borders was not an appropriate response to the spreading COVID crisis.  If I missed some scientific reason for this and you'd care to enlighten me, that would be welcome, thanks

Update from Wellington mayor:

Today I want to talk about supporting our hospitality sector, about sewage, our wonderful student volunteer army, and school - but more about that later.

Today we had sad news that a 5th New Zealander has died as a result of the Covid virus. Our thoughts are with the person’s family.

Much more positively the number of new cases continues to decline, with just 19 new and probable cases reported today. 75 more people are reported as having recovered. That’s great news.

We are on the right track to beat the virus – completely – to save lives, and to minimise the already extensive damage to our economy.

As you know, a lot of businesses are really hurting and people are losing jobs, or having hours cut back. Our hospitality, retail, entertainment and tourism sectors are being hit particularly hard. Wellington is widely recognised as having the best central city in the country.

It is the heart of the whole region, and of course our nation’s Capital.

Hospitality, retail, arts and events are all critical to that. We are going to need to work very hard to get that heart beating again when we emerge from lockdown. That means doing all we can to draw people back to town – safely.

Last Thursday your Council approved a Pandemic Response and Recovery Plan with a wide range of measures to help businesses and employees. The approved measures include:
- Rates relief to allow eligible commercial ratepayers to defer their June rates, without penalty, for at least six months.
- Not charging, and in some cases refunding food and alcohol licence fees.
- Stopping fees for outdoor dining areas on public footpaths for the duration of the pandemic.

We are also responding to the call for emergency off-licences to be made available for bars and cafes. We are asking the government to change laws to allow this to happen.
This is the only way many businesses will be able to trade at Level 3, but it also helps at any level below that.

I’ve spoken before the complex and expensive fix resulting from the break in the sewer tunnel which runs for 1.8 km under Mt Albert. Council will be asked to formally approve those costs this Thursday, and spread them over 10 years.

The estimated cost is up to $16 million all up for trucking and replacement pipes. The repair is complex and risky and we have had to get special dispensation to bring in skilled personnel from Germany where the new piping is made. They will leave Germany tomorrow, and will spend two weeks in quarantine when they arrive.

The repair itself involves drawing a 2km new pipe through the existing concrete sleeve. All going well it will be completed in mid May.

On another note, the Student Volunteer Army, with New World, has set up a new grocery delivery service. This is for people over 65, the medically vulnerable, and our wonderful healthcare workers and their families.

Also this week, good news for parents like me. The remote school term starts on 15 April with online learning and TV education during school hours. This is available on TVNZ2+1, TVNZ on Demand, Sky Channel 502 and Maori Television in Te Reo. Paper resources are being sent to homes where children can’t access a computer or the internet.

I’ll finish by re-emphasizing the most important message for all of us. Overall our numbers are promising, and we should all be proud of the part we have played in minimising transmission of this terrible virus.

But as the Prime Minister said, while we are in a much better position than many other countries, we cannot squander that position now. We cannot be complacent; we must dig deep, stick to the rules, and know that we will get through this together.

Wellington, you’re doing a great job, keep up the good work.

neb: quoting US conspiracy theorists:

I had that from an American... it's all WHO's fault, they didn't tell us. Fortunately, someone else linked an article about Vietnam and how well they're coping. https://www.asiapacific.ca/publication/how-vietnam-winning-its-war-against-covid-19

This article states that WHO met with the Vietnamese Health Ministry AND US CDC on 15 January. Five days before any cases were reported in America. And Vietnam still has zero deaths, despite a common border with China.

My American denier hasn't responded to this information. :)
