They are quickly getting to that situation by default in all the other states Ex VIC

If you close the boarders and quarantine arrivals and then successfully test, track, trace and isolate local cases, you will eventually get to isolation...

All other states now have single figures active cases, VIC are running 15-20,000 tests daily, so the kitchen sink is being thrown at it...

But .. wasn't he wanting to open New Zealand to Australia, thus compromise our countries health.

Well he might be a dick sometimes (mostly), but I would at least say he has adapted to the circumstances (for now). Australia did look like they were going to clear themselves of covid, but it seems they have botched it. Wonder how many of those people saying how Australia got it right and NZ got it wrong still think that.

Winston wont admit he was wrong - but it's as close as you will get.

This current braying from the opposition about opening borders is just ridiculous. At the moment there is no concrete evidence of any safe plan to announce and wont be for many months. They know that. They are just trying to look like they 'could' be in charge. I think Muller is reading public opinion very badly at the moment and is seeming more and more like Soimon each day that passes.

Its really easy to talk BS when you are in opposition and your comments carry no responsibility.

PS What time do they announce the daily figures for Victoria?

I think NZ needs to work out what the costs would be if we lived with the virus, and the how much it would cripple our economy. eg If we were another UK. Would people even travel here if our borders were open. I suspect that number would be down by more than half, and we would be in a far worse position than we are now. We are currently enjoying a covid free life due to the hard work we put in at great cost, which few other countries can do, and we also now have the chance to refocus our economy potentially away from tourism, which wasn't really sustainable long term and was saturated anyway. It also relies on air travel which is not exactly green. Things and economies change. We used to be just a farming economy and sheep decades ago. Luckily, unlike some pacific islands, 70% of our economy isn't based on tourism.

Agree. Some seem to think this is a choice, but the cost of that "choice" is more economy crash from future lockdowns. Which will end tourism again as well as the full national effect on the local economy. If Australia was like NZ, as in highly likely that the only cases are in quarantine, there is no CT, I would be saying bring it on. But it's not. Australia has over 10% CT last time I looked, a week ago. We were highly impressed with their result in the recent past, better than us, with cafes and haircuts galore, NZ was stupid apparently. Look today, we were right, AUS was wrong. Do it once was the correct strategy.

Its a pretty easy number to calculate from the Annual Balance of Payments figures, most recent is for March 2019 year,

Table 4 ( Current Account Services)

Travel exports, $14 Billion ( $4 billon is education related travel-students, $10 billion is regular tourists)

Travel imports $6.6 billion,

So that's a ~$7 billion hole ($4 billion students, and $3 billion in NZers holidaying offshore )

I feel that students will get a pass, they are valuable here, and unlike tourists, easier to lockdown for 14 days as they are here for the medium haul. So I see it as a 3 billion hole. Offset that by Kiwi overseas travellers who will explore NZ, the hole becomes less. Even in a recent long weekend the bookings were great, and thats just a long weekend.

What becomes of tourism.

I can't find the article again , but I did see a news item on weekend that was reporting that the high end lodge and conference market was not dead.
They had positive reports including including operator with more bookings than they did with overseas tourists last year.
Given sales conferences and incentive business can't go overseas.

So seems there is a capability to pivot to local, ok not everyone can benefit, or have a pivot able business.
We do have a Rich List , we have whole strata of those with money, and without that regular world trip, or cruise a good number will be liquid.
Just have to pry it from their cold hands. Pity we can't have a marginal tax, unless you spend it tax.

Helicopter rich listers.

We also have the older set of bucket listers, cut out of the guided tour market that may not actually know what NZ has to offer.
As NZer they probably think they have seen it all , but I am sure most of us have not even scratched the surface.
So pivot to less active activities , don't leave it to the kids , see x , do y before you die.
Rather than 10M for bungy jumping company, maybe marketing of regions and hidden gems to those that might have forgotten, to benefit all operators might be more effective.

This California woman went to two different "Trader's Joe", a discount grocery chain.

Shoppers are required to wear masks to get in. She took off her mask, but didn't get a reaction, didn't put any items in her shopping basket, and left without buying anything.

Since she wasn't successful in creating a scene at the first, at the second "Trader's Joe", she wore a mask, so she could get inside.

Again she didn't put anything into her basket, and got very close to shoppers hoping to elicit a reaction. After five minutes, staff politely asked her to put back on her mask.

Getting the attention she craved, she immediately threw her basket violently to the floor. Notice it's empty, though she been shopping for a while.

She later interviewed with several reporters saying she had a medical condition which prevented her from wearing a mask.

Funny how her breathlessness didn't stop her from yelling at staff, and storming out.

Ain't people grand?

These NZ was right , Aus was wrong (etc) comments are just nonsense

We dont know the final outcome. We're only a few months into this this, NO ONE knows how its going to play out long term.
We could easily have some covid pockets pop up over the next 12 months .

Its only luck that got us to where we are now . Luck, not planning (NZ didnt seem to have any planning, just seemed to be winging it as things progressed )

I think you are exaggerating the luck factor. A lot of people sacrificed their status quo, changed the way they work, lost jobs to get where we are. At the moment, I'd say out situation is "good" compared to Australia - and don't even mention the rest of the world when considering fatalities.
