Unfortunate that we have to now expect the worst behavior from some of those in quarantine .
perhaps a shock to the system is needed (jail time) in order to convince others to comply 100% .

Should be a month and in isolation where he gets out of his cell for an hour a day for exercise. Think thats harsh I don't think so he knew what he was doing by escaping out of the hotel.

New Zealands testing rate is still very low, despite being called out by the Minster earlier this week. . Yesterday about 3000 tests, which would also include those in hotels. I wish they would either exclude those, as they are outside the border tests. Or break them down into border tests, and community tests. We obviously reduce the chance of picking up any possible community tests, if we aren't doing much community testing.

If there are 6000 in quarantine they get tested twice. On average 400+ add and leave the facilities daily, and there would be 400 Day 3 tests and 400 day 12 tests on average, so we must be testing well over 2000 daily in the community, including doctor referrals and sentinel.

I think the minister wants over 5000 tests a day. Although it was 3000 yesterday, the day before it appears it was only about 2000, the the day before 1600, then the day before about 1000.

2000 a day with a population of 5 million is tiny, especially when there is a risk of workers in quarantine areas taking it home to family. As well as there being the risk of outlier cases that develop after 14 days.

Testing is really the only way to know if we have it in our community, especially as they aren't 100% accurate. So it is false economy not to do as much testing as we can. The number of people who have cold symptoms at the moment must be quite large due to the season, and I doubt all have been tested.

I wonder if it has anything to do with some doctors charging for consultations and tests when they shouldn't have been. So if one goes in with cold symptoms and they don't order a test, do they still charge for a consultation?

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

"Its use as a quarantine facility began with the arrival of the England in 1872, carrying several passengers with smallpox. Passengers and crew were quartered in makeshift accommodation. On other occasions, new arrivals would spend ten minutes in a smokehouse of chlorine, potassium nitrate and sulphur fumes for de-lousing"

I wonder if those three chemicals would be effective against C-19 ? Oh pity really. I have been in a RNZAF tear gas chamber without mask - horrific to say the least. I wonder if it has UFB?

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Why don't the Govt stump up the $40M to buy it and use it as a quarantine island and make returnees pay for their own stay at a nominal sum to recoup a little of the cost?

Its only problem is that there are just 2 houses for accommodation (8 bunks each), and a campsite...

I also heard discussion on the radio interviewing the minister, as to whether people why are born here and are permanent residents returning should pay. Ccompared to those that have gained residency, but were born overseas, and have dual residency with another country. There has also been talk of some form of loan system.

In some ways I don't think it is fair for some people to pay. But if they don't then we all pay for it in our taxes.

In Australia they are more ruthless and will just charge people with the stay. Simple and blunt. But luckily we aren't Australia.

With these various islands as quarantine centres, Matiu/Somes Island, Pakatoa Island, I start to think of the movie Papillon. Even though these islands don't have watch towers, armed guards, swamps with croc's & savage biting insects and it would only be for 14 days, there will still be idiots who would attempt escape by swimming for it just for the notoriety of it all.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
