You just have to hope that the diplomats coming in are reasonable and reasonably intelligent folks.

And you can bet some won't be...

And if they got caught out NZ would likely revoke their diplomatic privilege and they would be on the next flight home... either by being recalled or by NZ publicly kicking them out...

NZ needs to approve of diplomats stationed here...

This is a bit of a worry , if actually true .

Are some US testing facilities giving bogus test results
There has also been issues where testing facilities only report the positives , and not reporting the negatives

US : get positve results but never tested (when ACTUALLY tested get negative result)

if that's true that will be Trump's get out of jail card. "i've always said it was a hoax and nobody listened." -> 4 more years. just watch his ratings.

...And the wider Victoria (not just Melb) is mask required and a likely explosion of 'Karens'..

Not that I'm disagreeing with your point about their lockdown being less severe than our level 4, but although they are being given a large amount of publicity, the non-mask wearers are very rare.

In fact Melbourne's rapid adoption of masks gives me some hope that we might be able to do it properly if it had to be introduced here. (See this reddit thread for some appropriate comments).

I think the pertinent info from the suncoast article is that their testing regime is a shambles:

"“...People are sitting in their cars, sometimes for hours, or standing in line, six feet apart sometimes for hours. You’re registered though, you’re number 15 in line, and you are Jay Wolfson. If Jay Wolfson says he can’t wait any longer and he leaves, it will get number 15 and now get Rebecca Fernandez, who was standing behind him, and she tests positive, and then everyone from then on gets the wrong results. There has to be a better way to do this,” explained Dr. Jay Wolfson, Public Health & Medicine Professor for the University of South Florida."

Unfortunately politicians are good at twisting the story - never let the truth get in the way of a good excuse.

Really? I was under the impression by articles popping up there was already small pockets of protests when the first requirement went out. Tee-shirts and all confronting police.

Even we seem to have vocal groups using the ol pedestal that is FB against the idea and it's not a done thing (touchwood).

Sure, there's lots taking it up. But I figured that was just the 'normal' folk being part of 'the team' avoiding the $200 fine threat as a DIY covering is the cheaper no brainier.

Imagine Victoria, with over 700 cases in 1 day. That would be 140,000 close contacts based on 170 contacts per person! I don't think NZs system could cope with that.

Except the 700 cases in VIC are not all in the wild "community transmission" there are some very  large rest home clusters, that are basically contained, but the numbers keep rising as they test everyone

https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus-update-victoria-29-july-2020

Basically they need to stop moving around,  and the big reason people are moving is for Work.....

Wwhether they will be forced to the  point of a NZ style full lockdown I don't know....

The other compounding issue when it gets into these large organizations, its not just the residents at the resthome, but....

All the staff including cleaners that will be working on many business, Admin, Nursing, Social Services, Facilities Maintenance, a whole raft of people who go in and out .

Some are having to run 2-3 jobs , so  lots of potential contacts outside of the home.

The Washington Post - Covid-19’s toll so far: Nearly 150,000 dead Americans

today

Of the nearly 150,000 Americans who have died of covid-19, more than 6,100 have died in Texas, and 302 of those deaths have occurred in Hidalgo County, along the country’s southern border.

Forty-five of those bodies are in a refrigerated 18-wheeler that Aaron Rivera bought three weeks ago, when the phone was ringing off the hook at his Rivera Funeral Home in McAllen.

The funeral director had no choice but to tell families that their loved ones could not be cremated, could not be buried, could not be put anywhere but in a truck in his back lot.

There were so many bodies in his building that there was no place else for them to go.

The next appointments at the crematorium are two weeks away. The cemeteries are little better, backed up at least 10 days.

At the Rivera Funeral Home, the calls keep coming: It has handled more than 100 deaths related to covid-19 in three weeks.

I’ve been in this business for almost 40 years now, and I have never seen anything like this,” Rivera said. ...

I think Victoria could be locked down for a lot longer than NZ was, maybe even till the end of the year.

Lockdown != Lockdown as everyone knows it. They only have 'restrictions'

Only as of midnight can they not visit friends. And the wider Victoria (not just Melb) is mask required and a likely explosion of 'Karens'

Prior an including today, They still go to work. School, Limited group meetings. And only tonight, does that change a little bit more.

Still relatively free. They just can't interact with people now. Like how we had to avoid people passing in the footpath and keep to family bubble.

People who are named actually named Karen must really hate the newish term everyone is now using for complainers :)

From what I have heard from some people living in Victoria, some do want to do a NZ level 4 lockdown to eliminate it from the community. But some of their states have eliminated it without that strict level 4 lockdown. Maybe it is spreading worse now in Victoria  due to it being winter, plus more people inside and in close proximity in winter. Plus complacency I think is a big problem.

Fred99:

Check US FDA for EUA (interim approval) and selectivity/sensitivity data.

Then it's a few days after active infection before IgM can be detected, so with high false negatives and false positives (reacting to "common cold" coronaviruses), they're not very good.  The slower RNA test with isolation/quarantine are safer, you can't safely eliminate quarantine with IgM/IgG tests, to confirm a positive you'd need to do a RNA test - which should be done anyway - and all travellers should be quarantined (as we're doing in NZ) for two weeks.  There's no easy answer to avoid that need (quarantine).

FDA authorisation is more or less for "research purposes" - not diagnostics.

Ahhh.  That explains everything.  You are talking about IgM antibody testing not antigen testing. No wonder we are disagreeing.  Everything you have been saying is true for antibody testing but it does not apply for antigen testing.  Antigen tests for the virus itself (usually the spike protein).  The body takes several days to start producing antibodies, as you have said, where as antigens are detectable immediately.

This is another problem with PCR testing.  You need to send the sample of to a lab where mix ups occur.  Getting the test dome immediately in front of you eliminates these mistakes.

I realize that, and so it was just a very very rough guesstimate. Also have to factor in that some of these people maybe super spreaders as well. I recall that they can cope with up to 1500 per day without it potentially overwhelming their health system, so I hope they don't get near that level Unfortunately at this rate their death numbers in a few weeks time could now be very large. It is a bit like watching a slow train crash.

"Everything you need to know about New Zealand’s new managed isolation fees":

Who is going to be charged?

The business crowd and holidaymakers are the main target. If you’re in New Zealand right now and you plan to leave in the next few weeks for a getaway or business meeting you might want to look at your cancellation policy. The government won’t have much sympathy if you complain about the cost of coming back with a tan or a new business contact.

New Zealanders coming home for fewer than 90 days will also face the fees. There are some exemptions, but it rules out a quick visit for anyone who wants to attend, say, a wedding or a birthday. To escape the fee you pretty much need to be coming back to New Zealand with plans to live here, get a job and pay taxes.

Temporary visa holders will also be required to pay, unless they are critical workers or were ordinary residents of New Zealand before March 19. Based on current border restrictions, this category will probably apply mostly to partners of New Zealanders.

Good.

So everyone coming back now will have "plans" to stay 90 days, but once they clear the quarantine charges I bet those "plans" will change for a lot of them.  Worse case scenario is they may get a bill in the mail. Worth a try though.

All the others just need to visit a funeral, get one of those hand out cards to prove you went, make up some story of how you knew them and hey presto- exemption! (and you get a free feed)

Emirates is tightening up further. Little late for the 'via Dubai' cases already noted here.

No one will be allowed to fly on Emirates or Etihad flights unless they first show a negative test for COVID-19, according to strict new rules in the United Arab Emirates.

The requirement comes into force on August 1 and applies to all passengers, regardless of whether they're staying in the UAE or transiting through the airlines' hubs at Dubai or Abu Dhabi to another destination.

Passengers will need to be tested for the virus at a testing facility approved by their airline within 96 hours of their flight.

They will then need to present a printed copy of the negative test result when they check in for their flight. Those who cannot produce printed evidence of a negative result will be denied their plane ticket.

Also offering to pay the cost of quarantine IF you come down with it during.
