Ge0rge:

Thinking out loud - shouldn't nearly every country (including ours) have their highest death count this year since *insert abnormal catastrophic event date here*?. If a country's population has been growing for some time, then surely there are more deaths year-on-year? I expect ours to be bigger next year than it was this year - perhaps not by 15%, but surely logic says if more people are born, more are going to die?

Weirdly enough, the Coronovirus (well, the lockdown to be more specific) has actually lowered New Zealand's overall death count, -  "1200 fewer people have died this year than had at the same point in 2019".

Thanks to the lockdown we've had fewer flu and viruses in the community, less car crashes etc

Given the dubious performance of some of the professionals we should be grateful to have reasonable oversight. After all the professionals didn't bother to test Thelma and Fluese before releasing them, test most of the people working at the border, bother to read the law before lockdown, read the law around considering compassionate release, have any form of testing at the border or tell the truth about what they were doing.

There is desperate need for proper oversight and supervision of the professionals as well as an opposition asking all sorts of difficult questions the government doesn't want to answer. That's how our system of government is designed to work and without it an even bigger disaster will happen.

Those are not the professionals I mean.

Then who, specifically, do you mean?

Yip that was the first "scare" , its was also the same time as more cases were being detected in MIQ

The spike also shows up in testing data

I did not say we should accept issues. What I am saying is that some people word their criticism in a way that makes it look like the government - and people - of New Zealand were doing nothing, or did everything wrong.

I am saying that politics gets in the way and people will lie, fabricate their own realities and try to distort the actual accomplishments to their own gains. And some people fall for it.

The inverse of this is also true. Some people are willing to make every excuse for failings as it suits their politics.

who has seen trumps latest outburst ? https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/its-over-new-zealand-trump-attacks-nzs-covid-19-response-third-time

...To contrast the two countries, almost 175,000 people have died from Covid-19 in the USA, while New Zealand's death toll is 22....

If NZ had the same population as the USA, by comparison for every NZ death, the USA would have 118.

Maybe he should do the job he was elected for and lead America to reduce their death toll, not disparage other countries. Every country in the world is doing a better job. Maybe that should be casting his eyes in the mirror, or meeting with Dr Fauci.

People sure do.

The way I see it, in my opinion, New Zealand is winning. Better than scaremongering.
