who has seen trumps latest outburst ? https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/its-over-new-zealand-trump-attacks-nzs-covid-19-response-third-time

...To contrast the two countries, almost 175,000 people have died from Covid-19 in the USA, while New Zealand's death toll is 22....

If NZ had the same population as the USA, by comparison for every NZ death, the USA would have 118.

...

Not quite :).  NZ population ~5 m, USA ~331 m

To scale NZ deaths to US equivalent, multiple by 66.2

But yes NZ deaths (& cases), are tiny by comparison with the US.  And that is without considering the fact that NZ deaths from all causes to date this year are ~1200 less than average.

For bus QR codes to be useful there would need to be a different QR code for each route and service on the timetable. Otherwise there'd be no way to match passenger journeys to positive cases. Buses and, to a lesser extent, drivers don't do the same route every day. Each driver would have to pick up the correct pack of QR codes when coming on shift and remember to change them at the end of every service. The packs would have to be maintained and lost/damaged codes replaced. Reducing the boarding queue by having multiple copies on the bus would exacerbate the issues.

Personally, although I have a Goldcard, I use my Snapper.

Edit: On thinking some more, fixed (unchanging) QR codes might be enough. You could be alerted if you rode the same bus as a positive case on the same day.

On the Wairarapa Line each individual carriage has it's own QR Code.

A lot of the previous posts have been around the concept that the current solution on the buses of using Snapper leaving cash and Goldcard users to make a manual entry is acceptable and meets MoH requirements. It might do, but for the sake of a few posters in each bus we can have a better solution for everyone.

From todays brief they are looking at rolling out QR Codes for buses :)

That was predicated by discussion around buses that did not use a tag on tag off system... so I would not be expecting them to appear in AKL/WLG/CHC/

kingdragonfly: Every country in the world is doing a better job. Maybe that should be casting his eyes in the mirror, or meeting with Dr Fauci.

Just to be factual, USA is 10th on the Worldometer covid deaths per capita list and 8th on the infections per capita. Of course, you then get into the realm of under-reporting and over-reporting. But I doubt that there's any reasonable measure of covid response that says USA is the worst. So far.

Batman:

what do they think about the Federal govt there?

Americans (and of course this is a coarse generalisation... there's a wide range of opinions) have a deep distrust of any government, and their federal government in particular. However, the federal government doesn't figure majorly in people's daily lives. Your State government or even county is much more important, generally speaking. In many ways the POTUS is just a figurehead.

Anyone else impressed they managed to track the St Lukes infection to a shared bus ride, I think that is some good contact tracing

Can’t let facts stand in the way of opinion though.
If you take New York and New Jersey and their abysmal response out of the equation, they drop even further down.

Yes, I was pleasantly impresses that they had narrowed it to that too.
Excellent job by the staff that handled the interviews and did the investigative research.

Maybe....

They are postulating they were on the same route, it has not yet been shown they were on the bus at the same time...

.... but if it is confirmed they were on the same bus together that is good,

however if they confirm they were on the same bus.. ... but their stops and times did not overlap (Auckland has some quite long routes) it implies a surface transmission.... and that will see PT usage plummet......(both for essentials in Auckland, and other users around the rest of the country)

Good to see NSW down to 1 new case from 32,580 tests

Vic case numbers dip below 200 for the first time in more than five weeks.

nztim: "Mix of Trump Haters and Supporters - The $600 p/w unemployment benefit helped those in the beauty industry that lost their jobs but they expired, trump signed an executive order for $400 till end of the year"

Forbes: Here’s Why That $400 Unemployment Check From Trump’s Executive Order May Not Happen

...The biggest threat to Trump’s plan is state finances, which are already stretched thin because of the pandemic: If states can’t contribute that 25%, they may opt out of the program entirely to avoid the extra fiscal and administrative burden

It’s also unclear how quickly states could implement a new program if they chose to participate; Michele Evermore of the National Employment Law Project described the process to USA Today as an “administrative nightmare.”...

It is. But I would have expected them to have picked this up from their data matching systems. I would be more worried if they didn't pick this up, especially if both people normally traveled by bus each day to work etc, as the bus is effectively an inside location where the virus could have spread between people. Infact it is possibly a more likely place to be infected than a shop, as people are in very close proximity to one another.  But it also shows how wearing masks on public transport should be compulsory now. I am guessing they have to make it law first, before they can require this.

I had to go into Auckland CBD yesterday to collect something I had ordered earlier from PB Tech. Footpaths on the walk into town were quiet, but I put my mask on as I neared Queen Street.

Quite a lot of non masked people there, but streets weren't too busy so it was possible to avoid getting too close to most of them. I hope they aren't all travelling on public transport without a mask.

Having said that, most of the buses that I saw looked almost empty, so probably easier to distance yourself on a bus right now than in a shop. This will change when we go back to level 2.
