I agree with lots of the answers before, and understand this may have been a knee jerk response, but as they’re constantly ‘evaluating’ our levels and even redefining policy on who “essential” workers are (changing the main list too!) and allowing Y12-13’s back to school (but not their teachers 🤦🏼‍♂️) there’s no reason they couldn’t have adapted the “border” to a more logical point like the Waikato river, or even to Drury and allow FRANKLIN to exist as the single unit it was originally designed to be. This would mean 1/2 the people crossing the border currently wouldn’t have to (they’d already be on the same side as their workplace, and the 6 local schools on both sides of the current border would have their ‘zoned’ teachers and children able to work according to the level they’re in.

Currently all 6 schools on the border are forced to be L3 simply because their staff are spread on both sides of the border and they ALL can’t field a decent crew. Pokeno, Harrisville, Tuakau, Buckland, and all the Pukekohe schools are ‘defacto’ L3 even though NO case is anywhere in Franklin district...

Not to mention the workers in lots of the local shops/workshops/etc that are ‘stuck’ on the wrong side and getting no pay or even worker compensation as the businesses are able to run ‘click and collect’ even though half their staff can’t come and are just not being paid.

It’s a total shambles here!

It really doesn't matter where they draw the line there will be negative side effects. Public policy is like that.

If they draw the line where you suggest someone else will be negatively effected and have totally reasonable arguments to draw the line somewhere else.

It sucks for the people involved but that's the way it works unfortunately.

It’s the number of people affected that matters, particularly as to how ‘porous’ the border is and how easily the virus could then pass through. Choosing a non ‘legal’ boundary which respects the social and economic movement patterns would then limit the number of ‘essential’ crossings and thus the chance the virus ‘escapes’ the contained area too... it’s a basic math statement to say that the less people crossing the border means less transmission risk

I went out today, and the bloody app had logged me out again. So frustrating. It seems to do this each time there is an app update, which isn't normal for an app to  log the person out after each app update. Some reason my password manager, Samsugs built in one,  also fails to save the login details, so couldn't relog back in. IMO this is potentially going to stop people using it. I don;t really know why there can't be a mode that will still allow scanning when logged out.

I also use the covid tracker, also logged out today. It took me a couple of seconds to log back in again.

Just a reminder the virus doesn't care about our convenience or societal practices.

We're so used to thinking about things in term of human systems and pleading exemptions and exceptions it's a real shock to many to face a threat that doesn't give exemptions or make exceptions.

If there is a containment area they shouldn't be letting anyone in or out unless absolutely essential. That only 5% or 10% aren't being allowed in or out is a bit pathetic. I've been expecting the virus to spread outside of Auckland if we carry on behaving like that. Those 50,000 vehicles / day make excellent carriers.

Absolutely.
I hope they redraw boundaries for Covid confinement regions so as to minimise the need for exemptions and cross-boundary traffic.

As I said in the previous post, I expect that the decision to make the current Level 3 boundaries the same as the Auckland City Council boundaries was purely urgency-driven - "Where are we going to put the boundaries? The Minister wants an answer now, the PM's press conference is in fifty-five minutes and she needs to have this written into her speech. Stop dithering Smithers, the Minister needs an answer Right Now!"

I get the impression that as you suggest above, the tight timeline for the announcement meant any boundary other than "Auckland region" was infeasible.

Sadly the Auckland boundary has a few key issues that make it poor for this purpose:

  • The Township of Otaua is in the Waikato, but has no road access to the Waikato without traveling through Auckland. Town has no supermarket, pharmacy etc. These people are breaking the law if they go to the supermarket etc without gaining a exemption (too slow if they need food or medicine now).
  • Border runs down the center of some roads, making exact enforcement impossible.
  • Large number of roads means even approximate road blocks would be too numerous to be feasible.
  • The likes of Pukeno & Tuakau function as Auckland satellite towns but are in the Waikato, resulting in large numbers of people cut off from their jobs.

As a result of the above the police have picked a few key roads for checkpoints south of Auckland. (subsequently moving some and adding more), that are not comprehensive and don't align with the actual boarder.

https://covid19.govt.nz/assets/resources/maps/COVID-19-police-road-checkpoints-map.jpg

Drawing a custom covid-19 border along the Waikato river, and across the north of the Waikato could get comprehensive coverage with less road blocks than we have currently, and would reduce the number of people cut off from their workplaces etc.

All well and good for sophisticated users. My 73 year old mother, who is generally quite competent with technology, wouldn't have a clue how to use a password manager and doesn't want to. She uses a notebook.

There are far more users like her than like you.

That may be but I don't think it applies to this specific case.

Batman: Public health looking for people on buses...

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12358849

How the heck can we have a level3 lockdown & still allow travel on buses . Whats the point of a 'lockdown' with so many
points of cross infection seemingly OK to be used . And then close down butchers & vegie shops

A sealed metal tube (bus) would be perfect for spreading covid to many of those in there.
A Claytons level3 .

Yep,
Seems a really dumb idea to me - & I think I said the same during 1st lock down.

Silly to put a bunch of strangers with bad memories - in a confined public transport environment - all touching surfaces & their faces & not expect risk/problems!
(All public transport should be suspended at Level 3 & 4 in my opinion) - it's just silly to have it still running.

Presumably, given parking and car ownership prices up that way. You would get an uproar from the essential users relying on it for cross-town travel if totally stopped.

That's not to say the switch couldn't be thrown for 'no ID no ride' for Nurses and the likes.

But you will also cripple a large percentage of elderly. Which is where the lvl4 assistance runs came into play. But are not under 3

Similarly, aircraft. Tolerated it seems. Air-Bus.. has that name for a reason :)

True. A lot of people rely on public transport. A mask would be the minimum and social distance, if possible.

The worst thing an elderly person could do is ride a bus or Train - they are the very people at 'worst' risk.
Far better they take a taxi - or have a designignated family member drive them.
There is all sorts of options like "Driving Miss Daisy" businesses. (& even Uber)

Public Transport is not used by "a huge number of people" - that's why it's a huge money black hole & can't pay for itself.

Stopping these services wouldn't be much of an inconvenience. (But local politically - it would be embarrassing when the cities continue to function fine...so probably untenable from their prospective - better to allow infection to spread.)
