Is anyone else wondering how we are still getting such a relatively high number of new cases considering we are coming to the end of the 14 day incubation cycle while in lockdown? I could understand some coming from households, as they would now be into at least the second transmission cycle, but 4 from churches sounds high. Certainly the extension of the lockdown was needed, as I don't think the public would be happy about us going out of lockdown tomorrow based on the numbers. Also the unlinked case in ICU concerns the DG of the MOH, which isn't a good sign, as the case just popped up with no link.

Also is there an age breakdown of who is/has been in hospital, and who is also in critical condition, from their latest outbreak? These numbers sound quite high too, this early on, considering no rest homes appear to have been affected this time. It could suggest that there are more cases in the community yet to be identified.

With the number of new cases and number of Churches, Schools, Shopping centers, sites across large area of Auckland,
North, South and East, really no choice.
Then you add bus trips on the morning of lockdown and even that is uncertain.
Puzzle over how serious recent case now in Hospital is linked to cluster, so we don't know intermediate cases that might exist.
Looks like we need every day including weekend, and weekend especially provides great spreading opportunities if we had dropped earlier.

Testing blitz to make use of the next few days, will hopefully close this off, before measures come off and people gather again.

Its very disappointing and then I look at Melbourne ......

We now have Aussie Hospitals putting out call to NZ staff to come to Australia, as their staff struggle to keep up, and getting infected and having to isolate.

And yet I see posts, now on LinkedIn, saying how terrible the government response is and how an immediate change of government is the only way to save us from covid. Anyone reading those posts would say we are having an American level of transmission and death.

Interestingly, those posts come with calls to open the border.

Obviously some people think more about their pockets than about the country as a whole.

What is that saying again about not changing horses in mid-stream? In any case, I don't see how that would be an improvement. Any new lot would just be building on the experience already gained. Certainly nothing I have seen from National persuades me that they would do any better.

NZ doesn't have any choice in what it is doing, because our hospital system would very quickly be overwhelmed. What does concern me though, is why we are using a lot of different hospitals to treat serious cases. I would have thought it would make more sense to have them all at a single hospital, to reduce the risk of staff at different hopspitals getting infected, and to keep them all in one place.

The border is already open, that is how the virus got in. I think it has already been proven that economically, eliminating the virus is best for the pockets of the country as a whole. Even if we open our borders and let the virus spread,  our hospital system has nowhere near the capacity and ICU beds as many countries in Europe, and  would quickly be overwhelmed. Much other hospital treatment for other conditions and tests could be postponed, potentially costing other people their lives. We want to avoid the situation where doctors have to choose who to treat, and who not to treat due to a lack of resources.

But many people overseas don't want to travel during a pandemic, so tourism around the world is almost dead. Florida's tourism numbers are terrible. People are far more likely to want to  travel to a country that is Covid free, which is why we have been getting a lot of people returning to NZ. IMO the number returning to NZ would likely be far smaller, if we became another US or UK.

Not good, a new unlinked case has appeared in Auckland Friday.

Person taken to hospital in ambulance, looks like discovered after that.

Virus may not be contained.

The genome of the man’s infection has been sequenced and linked back to the large Auckland cluster, so it is linked to the cluster, they just dont know where he came in contact with the cluster.

Hydroxychloroquine mentioned twice in two days as a cure by Trump.

Here's a video from today from Florida casting doubts on it.

Infectious disease experts recommend against hydroxychloroquine in hospital settings

10 Tampa Bay

Hydroxychloroquine has been discussed a lot over the last six months as a potential treatment for coronavirus. There is now a strong recommendation against using this drug.

That recommendation comes from the Infectious Diseases Society of America. It has previously said it should only be used in clinical trials, but after seeing some larger studies is now recommending against it in a hospitalized setting.

As for continual ~6 case average. Is it not the same incubation lag that we have talked about so many pages.

Feel fine 1 day, sick 2 days later. Go get tested, oh look I got it last week from a bloke/family we saw just on the first few days of lvl3 who is now in isolation. Meanwhile you ignore the 'stay at home and avoid people' rule while meeting people in the community and lifting your mask off all day. Or still seeing people outside your bubble against lvl3 recommendation. oh look. 4 more infected.

3 days later, they're showing so go get tested too.

Rinse, repeat.

As they say, this tail ain't going to stop in a hurry unless locals treat it like lvl4 and take it seriously to cut it off at the pass.

Another kind of Lockdown.

Residents in the capital of Xinjiang are being forced to take Chinese medicine, being handcuffed to buildings and ordered to stay inside for weeks as part of a harsh range of measures to tackle coronavirus, it has emerged.

Urumqi, the capital of the semi-autonomous region known for its draconian security measures, has been in a “wartime state” of lockdown for more than a month after a cluster of cases emerged in July, when the outbreak had been mostly contained elsewhere in China.

I'm not wondering and not surprised, in fact I expected it. The virus was given a massive head start for months and months. We are now playing catch me if you can.
