Your prostate. Have it checked.

Since my surgeries back in 2023 I have had regular MRI and blood checks to make sure the schwannoma in my spinal cord doesn't reoccur.

In my last blood test the GP noticed a slightly over the limit PSA (associated with the prostate). Not enough to be a positive for something more serious, or to refer to a specialist, based on national guidelines for my age. But after a physical exam, she sent me anyway.

A MRI identified two lesions, both in a mid-range, so again, not conclusive one way or another about the malignancy.

The options presented were: wait another twelve months and do another MRI to identify any growth, or have a biopsy done and know results immediately.

I had a transperineal biopsy done last Monday, under GA. I have an appointment to discuss results in a couple of weeks.

My point: if you have access to medical care, do not leave this for later. Do not think this is something you can delay. Do not think you are too busy with work and this can be pushed to the side.

If you can, do it when you need to do.

I will update later with results.

Had a consult with the specialist today.

The biopsy result came back positive for prostate cancer.

We discussed radiotherapy and surgery. We decided for a surgery and a referral was sent to one of the two surgeons available in Wellington.

Last week's bone CT scan for the anomaly found during the MRI came back as "monitor, another scan in six months" but knowing now we have a positive result for prostate cancer they will re-evaluate the CT scan to make sure it's not related.

Again, I had just marginally high PSA levels and I'm not even in the age group government recommends for specialist referrals. I have a good GP and health insurance.

If you suspect something, do not delay. For me it started with a routine blood test. That's an easy one to do. Have it checked.

Had a blood test last week, and saw the results online, with a follow up consult with the surgeon today.

The numbers show a virtually non-existent PSA, and I got the all clear.

The surgeon will follow-up with PSA tests every six months for the next couple of years, then moving to once a year after that, which can be monitored by the GP.

Basically, cancer-free now.

(Note: radical prostatectomy with intact prostate and no spread means the chance of recurring cancer is very small, but can never say never. Chances are I would likely die with it if it ever came back).
