Didn't you get the memo. the free colour is now white....  :)

( it'll probably change again if Elon bangs his head, or has a design ephiphany)

They will probably save money having white as the default colour. Harder to see small defects, although the stories I have read is that the quality of the paint work is high now.

The configurator for NZ still has black as the default colour without extra cost.

Wouldn't buy the black one for NZ, too hot in the summer. Better with silver or white. But my plan is to wait for the second hand Model 3s to become available, so still at least a year or two away before I will even consider buying one.

There is a EV public transportation system in town ... https://www.moia.io/en/this-is-moia

Well, it's not NZ but maybe worth to mention.

kingdragonfly: I looked at the Twizzy a couple of time, but the lack of doors, slow top speed, and very high price put me off.

Doors and windows are available - optionally.

80km/h is more than enough in a city. Safe range (with spare) in strong winter: 60km (there's no heater on flight deck ;-) , in summer 90-100km, re-charging time is 3,5 hours (on mains 230V AC).

The vehicle is in the quad bike insurance class and tax-exempted (here). The battery can't be baught - only rented (but full operational coverage in case of any defect/derating).

The are mainly two versions: one cargo (compartment behind the driver) and one with a non luxury but astonishing backseat for a passenger.

I have no complaints with the Twizy ;-)

(... but future will be hydrogene).

Honda e First Drive

When Robert Llewellyn was given an early test drive of a Honda e electric car in Frankfurt, Germany, he jumped at the chance.

Shorter range than the new Renault Zoe, but definitely a lot more "wow" factor. I'd say it's cooler than even Tesla.

Due to the cost of batteries and the R&D for this new tech, it's going to be a while before we see decent new EVS fall under that price point. It's why the government needs to step in and provide subsidies so the price of an EV can compete with the price of an ICE.

So the subsidy is now 20,000 to 40000? Don't think so

Another solution is that the manufacturers write off the R+D over a longer period. Right now, there are stuff all EV sales. In a few years there will be a lot one would hope, then the R+D can be spread over more vehicles. If their manufacturer volume is taken up by sakes, no need. If the production grows and they aren't selling as fast then drop the price. Its what retailers have been doing for thousands of years.

The cost of an EV engine is far less than an ICE, so EV is cheaper. EV has no gearbox, so EV is cheaper. EV has batteries, so EV is more expensive. You would think that without R+D there isn't much in it at all. Say 15k? And how much is this R+D? I can't be massive. EV tech is not new. Engine swap and a battery pack. Yes its not that simple but its also not complex either.

I'll call it now. There will never be a $10,000 or more subsidy for consumer EV's, never. Its up to manufacturers to set a price that will sell, not a Government. The party that makes that a policy will be voted out, for all the obvious reasons.

If my back of an envelope 15k price difference is near enough, then paying a 15k premium for a fuel saving vehicle is compelling. And lets face it, saving money is the only reason to buy an EV. Yes, we all like the green side of it, but when I pay 80k for a Kona that I could pay 40k for, why would anyone pay that, its totally uneconomic. Look at those who will hold off being an EV until they get a subsidy, they are happy to spew emissions, as its just about money.

Back to my 15k price premium. If I can save good money each week, that premium is a good investment. After payback its a GREAT investment. And Im happy to be spewing less emissions. The manufacturers are the ones that can, and should manage supply and demand.

Nice, once I got past the futuristic toy design. Why do they do that, its just a car.

Like the 45 degree turning circle, camera mirrors, its a car designed by a car company....

We are looking at a new car soon, while this is too small, I like it

See this 1973 BMW 2002 conversion from Youtube channel "If It Ain't Broke Still Fix It"

https://www.youtube.com/user/2002zippy/videos

You can replace a petrol car's engine / transmission / petrol tank with the equivalent parts from a Nissan Leaf.

https://www.instructables.com/id/200kW-AC-Motor-Controller-for-Electric-Car/

200kW AC Motor Controller for Electric Car

Electric cars are the future, and are beginning to take off today. However, they are still pretty expensive. A 3 phase AC motor is the absolute standard for car companies when they make an electric vehicle. The Tesla Roadster, Nissan Leaf, etc... All of the big boys use AC. It has a number of advantages over DC. An AC motor can last almost forever. You get regenerative braking for free, so that the energy you used to get your car moving can be captured and put back into your battery pack. This also makes the brakes last almost forever! There are almost no parts that get any wear in an AC motor except for the ball bearings, which are typically very durable.

The market is literally flooded with 3 phase industrial AC motors, so you can get them CHEAP if they are used. Yet, almost all DIY electric vehicle conversions are done using a DC motor. Why is that? One big reason is that the motor controller is typically very expensive. For example, a 211kW Brusa AC motor controller for use in an electic car will run you $21,000

I'm going to walk you through the process of building your own 200kW (268 HP!!) AC motor controller for around $1000.

Thats interesting. Right now EV are way too costly. Its extremely poor value. Understandable for any new tech, remember CDRW at $2500?

If a refit can be done at a cheaper price then why not? Its another means to achieve the same end. If refits disrupt the "industry" then the "industry" needs to get real.

I think a wrecked Nissan Leaf would make a fine donor car, for converting an ICE car / truck/ updating a classic vehicle.

Probably worth setting up a Trademe alert

"NIssan Leaf" wrecked OR wreck OR totalled OR damaged OR damage OR rolled OR salvage OR salvaged

There is anouter auction trade focuses site most damaged cars end up on if you want to buy a crashed leaf.

Biggest challenge will be spoofing al the parts so they think they are in the original car so they still work. Has been done before, but I don't think it would be easy....

I believe that's is what Paul Holmes 200kW AC Motor Controller is meant to bypass. It replaces the

You use the motor, mounts, batteries, "gear box" (single speed reduction gear), and inverter.

It's open-source.
