Dingbatt: I wonder how many pages this thread would take up if people didn’t use half page quotes.
...

I'm guilty of this as sometimes I responds days later...and tend to leave most of the thread in place for context.....But I do try to reduce as much as possible.

Obraik: On to a different subject, a common claim that seems to pop up in the comments of news articles about EVs is that they're dirtier than a ICE vehicle. I came across this well written article on why that's not true.

Engineering Explained on Youtube is a petrol head engineer (proper engineer who worked in the auto industry) and explains lots of interesting car stuff scientifically. Primarily he is ICE based but lately he has gotten into the EV scene. He says it like it is and doesn't gloss over the warts.

He does a good video on the topic of weather or not EV is worse for the environment and works out the data based on charging EV's in the 2 USA states that the greenest and dirtiest electricity, so as to be unbiased.

As usual, "Engineering Explained" left out the carbon footprint for oil exploration, refining, and transportation.

Even when using coal to power EV, the efficiency of large power plants plus very high efficiency of electric transmission is better than an equivalent ICE car total energy usage, from drilling rigs to gas tank.

Oil refining using about 1.2 KWh of electric power per liter of gasoline. The same power which would power the EV about 5 KM. If the oil came from tar sands then that figure is double or triple. Again this excludes oil transportation.

Oil production also produces a lot of CO2 from flaring, burning off unwanted gases.

We are lucky in New Zealand in that we have no shortage of green energy possibilities, so even the worst possible estimate will put an EV ahead of an equivalent ICE vehicle within a year.

Aside from oil companies, petrol station owners, petrolheads, do many others really see EV as not that good? I don't think many do to be honest.

Oh yeah Trump and his fanatics, slit them in that group.

To me, its like Solar PV, its great, but the current payback period is too large.

Yeap, you are correct - but he was giving gasoline cars every benefit of the doubt where there was any ambiguity in the figures, (including forgetting refining emissions) and still completely debunked the myth that EV is worse for the environment.

GM and Volkswagen have said they're no longer going to be making hybrids anymore. Their electric vehicles will be BEV only.  Interestingly, GM says they will have 20 EV models in the next four years...maybe we'll see a Commodore EV down these ways. What will the bogans say?

Interesting, I thought Toyota were stuck on hybrids, I wasn't aware they were working on pure EVs.

There was also an interesting article about a new electric motor concept. However, as the author states, they still need to prove it in a working device.

It's a very recent development. They have signed some agreements with CATL and seem to think they will have a demonstrable Solid State battery for next year's Olympics.

Toyota kinda had to admit recently that their bid on Hydrogen isn't really going anywhere and announced they were doing some EVs

"Scrapped hybrids, dropping NEV sales in China, and some backtracking on big vehicles."

Too many acroynms! NEV is either "Neighborhood Electric Vehicle" in the US or "New energy vehicles" in China, meaning everything but petrol or diesel vehicles, "ICE".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neighborhood_Electric_Vehicle

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_energy_vehicles_in_China

Perhaps the US and Europe can agree to change "NEV" to "VEEV": "Virginity enhancing electric vehicle"

Renault ZOE Z.E50 all-electric hatchback / zero emission city car 2019

fully charged show

Renault have released some updates on the figures quoted in this episode, most notably the range of this Renault ZOE Z.E50 is now confirmed at 245 miles WLTP standardised cycle ( ≈ 394 km) and the acceleration from 50 - 75 mph (or 80 - 120 km/h) is 7.1 seconds.

This represents an increase of 31% in range from the previous 2nd generation model (Z.E 40) that had a range of 186 miles ( ≈ 300 km) WLTP.

The Renault ZOE has always been a favourite affordable EV of Fully Charged and we're not alone as apparently "cumulative sales" make it the most common EV in Europe.

It might not look it, but this 3rd generation model is the latest, fastest, most rangey Renault ZOE all-electric hatchback. Crucially more of a techlift than a facelift; a 52kWh battery pack replaced the 40kWh, bringing a WLTP calculated range of 245 miles ( ≈ 394 km) - a 31% increase in range for this new Renault EV, already impressive and relatively cheap electric car.

* improved dashboard
* better connectivity
* 50kW fast charge ability
* minor exterior tweakage

Biggest issue with earlier zoe's was no CCS or Chademo so even though it could take 3 phase ac the number of stations that could supply that was very small.
