SheriffNZ: My view (and the law), drive to the speed limit. If the signs say 100, don’t exceed 100. If you think your speedo is reading low, get it calibrated (I’m assuming this is a thing). If it’s a long way out, it should get picked up at a warrant.

In summary, drive to the speed limit.

How?  I've never seen any testing of this during a warrant check.

Correct - speedometers are not tested in NZ vehicle inspections.

From your link:

Passing on the left

You can only pass on the left when:

  • there are 2 or more lanes on your side of the centre line and you're able to pass safely by using the left-hand lane

It would be really stupid if this was not allowed, especially if it was a 3 or 4 multi-lane highway.

In the UK it is illegal to pass on the left on motorways in free-flowing traffic.

However their Highway Code says “Overtaking on the nearside (left) is legally acceptable if you are driving on a multi-lane carriageway in congested conditions, and the lane to the left is moving at a faster speed than lanes to the right.”

Unless traffic is moving faster in your lane. Its a stupid rule and depending on circumstances sometimes does not apply. Thanks goodness we don't have it here.

Only because many NZ drivers don’t obey the law that requires them to keep left on motorways and multi-lane roads.

On multilane roads there are often junctions where 1 or more lanes head in a different direction. You could be keeping to the left of your stream but still be right of other traffic. As an example 4 lanes head out of Wellington. The 2 left-hand lanes eventually split off at Ngauranga leaving 2 righthand lanes heading to Hutt Valley. Often traffic in lanes 1&2 moves faster than 3&4.

You can already get a sense that's logic getting in the way of 'eveyone else should get out of my way' ;)

Same in Christchurch on the CNC. It has 2x2 merging into 3. Those in #2 seem to refute the idea to adjust to merging (to #1 from the right) due they're 'passing' already. Or will closely weave past crossing the massive merge space into far right as soon as the zone starts.
About where there has been regular barrier rail clipping.

I've fast discovered the rule will never find a sensible middle ground with enough people when the greater interpretation means claiming sole rights over anyone else.

@newtogeekzone:

I've just started driving in New Zealand and from what I understand there is no leeway over the speed limit allowed

However, when I stick to the speed limit, I find that alot of people overtake me

If I go with the speed that most of the other cars are going, and there is a police around, will they just overlook it? Or will they just randomly pull over a single car?

  1. your speedo will likely be reading 3-7% low so while you are doing 100 on your dash you are actually only going 93-97Kph. If you have a GPS then drive at 100Kph according to that and see what it says on the dash.
  2. THe accuracy of the speed measuring equipment the police use is about 2kph at 100kph so they do have a tolerance, what they use on the day, no idea but it will be more than 2kph.
  3. it will likely be random who they pull over unless someone is alot more noticeable than eveyone else.

My VW reads about 6kph low at 100. My wife’s Toyota is quite accurate.

If there is more than one lane in your direction and you are not overtaking you must not sit in the right lane. Police can issue infringement notices for this.

There are always ignorant drivers sitting in the right lane not overtaking or dawdling. They are very very annoying.

  • Surely if your Speedo is reading 100 when you're doing 93-97, it's reading high? This is the third post incorrectly saying that Speedos read low.
From my understanding, Speedos aren't legally allowed to read low, but they are allowed to read up to around 5% high. So you can never have an excuse for speeding that your Speedo was reading at or below the limit.
In my experience, in good conditions you can drive at 110 indicated and the combination of Speedo overreading and the few kph allowed over the limit means you won't get a ticket. Also keeps you with the flow on motorways

@tweake Not the point cars should be moving left! They are breaking the Law

this is not the UK. its always been allowed to overtake using the left lane in NZ.

Sorry my bad. It indicates106 at actual 100.

For some reason it seems natural to say it reads low. English is weird sometimes.
