I read in the paper this morning a certain EV has come in at No.7 on the top ten car sales for September!

I suspect If you discounted rental sales it would have done even better. Of course I would not believe the model 3 could keep this up and this is only a one off.

Or could it hold its placing maybe, October too, after that though unlikely.

The Model 3 it was actually the top selling single car model (exc. rentals and Utes ) for September,

Of course the pre orders will skew the Tesla numbers, so we will probably have to wait till November until they are totally out of the system

Good news: Tesla And Maxwell Technologies

Tesla and Maxwell Technologies together changes everything. With the deal to buy Maxwell Technologies done, why is it such a big, big deal? It’s another one of the laundry list of items that investors and analysts seem to not fully appreciate how much this may push Tesla even further ahead of the competition.

New Tesla battery? At the beginning of September, the distinguished battery researcher Jeff Dahn from Dalhousie University, released a report about a new battery formulation that could power an electric vehicle for 1.6 million kilometers (or 1 million miles). Is this the battery we've been waiting for?

Looks like that million mile battery has better wear but at much lower densities than we currently use.

Presumably higher end cars impacted first (/ already impacted) since (a) no or negative cost margin to buy an EV, (b) their owners more likely to be able to afford the cost, and (c) education & environmental awareness levels.

But mid - lower end cars may well be impacted sooner than thought. High likely depreciation will presumably become an increasing issue for ICE car purchases over the next 5 years or so (well for cars costing say 30k+ ?)

Yup... and I'd be happy with a 250,000 mile battery. Not many ICE cars get that far anyway.

I've never been a big fan of the idea of everything-is-a-touch-screen that the Teslas go for. Physical buttons may be somewhat ... permanent ... but they're much easier to press (or to be more accurate much more difficult to accidentally press) than a virtual button on a touch screen. If I didn't think computers were cool and all I wouldn't be on GZ, but there's a time and a place.

EDIT: I'm just going out to get a fresher onion for my belt.

This has been a problem for a while. Arguable designed in obsolescence. There are companies that support Tesla cars given the cold-shoulder by Tesla Inc (rebuilds/repairs/out of warranty etc), and they can repair this. They turn off the excessive logging (and also enable remote support so they can provide remote support just like the factory). If you ship your computer to them, they can turn down the logging and avoid the failure in the first place.

I totally agree. Safe design enables the drivers eyes to always stay looking outside of the car - hence indicators & light controls, gears, pedals etc are tactile and normal manufacturers follow common, consistent and predicable patterns. Touch screens are not an eye's-free design. I wouldn't be surprised if in the future safety studies lead to mandating of eye's free/tactile designs in the same way hand's free for phones has been mandated & TV's are not allowed to be visible to drivers whilst in motion.

I don't like touch screens in cars - definitely distracting until you learn to totally ignore them but you loose basic features if you ignore them in a Tesla and its the main reason I will never own one of the current Tesla models. It's a futuristic feature in an age when other manufactures have learned (the hard way in some cases) that customers prefer EV's the look & work like conventional cars.

Crash rates after buying new cars are high with entertainment centres being a leading cause. There is no reason why Tesla couldn't have a HUD like some Suzukis.

Any programmer will be aware of how much flash hates constant write cycles. This will be a case of managers ignoring subordinates.

There is no way I'd want everything on a touch screen and have to go through menus to turn on the demister after the windscreen has instantly fogged.

The child labour cobalt is probably in cheap batteries sold via Ali Express and in batteries in cheap phones. Auto makers generally are onto the ethical issues now. About 62% of the cobalt from the DRC is via Chinese mining companies who don't employ children. Australia and Canada area also grouting sources of cobalt.

It's easier than that. Check out the videos. The car can accept voice instructions, too.

Australia is likely to be the US's future way to get round Chinese domination of African supplies of Rare Earths, Lithium and Cobalt, and will set them up for another mining boom...

There was a fellow on fully charged podcast who was a metals trader in uk who said that less than 5% of world cobalt came from questionable sources.

I'm not say that's makes child labour acceptable but it does counter to some degree the ev are bad because they contain cobalt thread

Looking at those non democratic fossil fuel producing countries.
