My vote would be for the Holden.  I have test driven a VF Calais V8 and I rate it.

I have owned a Commodore since they first arrived in New Zealand buying one of the first NZ assembled VB's.  Every one I've had has given great service. VB SL, VC SL, VL Calais, and VY S.  The VL had done 275,000 when I sold it, the VY has just clicked over 300,000 Km.

The later model Falcons seem to be pretty good too.  The XR6 turbo is pretty quick and smooth, but then the V8 SS sounds nice and has good low down grunt and has goes to 4 cylinder mode during deceleration to save fuel. I think the Holden drives nicer than the Ford, but then that's just personal preference.  In the end between the two it comes down to the features one or the other has that you have a need for or that appeal to you.

I wouldn't worry about the factories closing down. There's plenty of both the Holden and Ford been sold, there's a big enough market for spares.  They wont be abandoned.

Trunks2: My dad just got a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT (the V8 one) after after comparing it to the likes of a Commodore R8, Audi Q5, Merc SUV etc, huge step up from his VE Commodore R8 and it was much better value than the competition.

Its a beast, very quick. handles well and sounds awesome :P, not very good on gas as you would expect but very comfortable and he takes it up to the ski fields no worries.

this one here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LU2DjkiAI4

T
he diesel one was good too (has air suspension which the SRT does not), over 1000km to a tank apparantly, but no comparison to a V8 :P

yes I did consider the SRT ... but at that price you'd get the RRSport 2015 no brainer

The SRT came out to about $110k I believe, whereas the V8 RR sport starts at $155k with less power and less gizmos (adaptive cruise control, heated seats/steering wheel for example which the SRT has standard).

Since you have always been  a Ford man, the answer is simple.....Buy a Ford.

ilovemusic: highlander ?
every generation has handled like a bag of pooz.

$50k-ish will get you a used range rover sport.
but best have a few quid tucked away for the inevitable repairs.

my pick would be a porsche cayenne.
much better built than any rr, faster and almost as capable off road.
lots to choose form for the price of a holden or ford.

gosh you're right the Porsche is dirt cheap! but my friend's friend had one and it couldn't do a grocery run without stopping at the pump!

if you have the cash to buy in this price bracket a few more bucks on gas shouldn't hurt...  much.

there's also a cayenne diesel - yuck.

or the poor cousin vw toureg diesel - yucker

you might even find an audi q7

I doubt a q7 would be that cheap but I don't want either. Way too big and clumsy.

Wondering what the normal income:car price ratio is? i.e. how many weeks/months salary would you spend on a car?

Say you buy a $70k car - which is more than than the median gross household income... What sort of salary would you be on to spend that on a car?

NOT an invite to talk poverty, plenty of other threads for that at the moment.

A lot of people with flash or new cars either have a business or drive a company car. Normal salary people like me = Honda fit. :(

I think Holdens and Fords are bogan cars :P

I'd say go for something classy and European, like TimA suggested!
