Looking at the odometer the number of charges implies only about 57kms per charge. So perhaps this is another case of charging to 100% too frequently and not allowing the battery to drain very far?

I missed the Dunedin meet-up as called back to work which was dissapointing. I ordered my Leaf last year 6weeks after test drive at the ev meet-up....

pogo: @Linuxluver. Granted, that chart may be wrong, but it seems the 30kWh Leafs are still prone to degradation. Your post got me thinking about buying a 30kWh model, so I'm asking dealers for Leaf Spy info. The first response I get was this:

Maybe you're just treating your Leaf really well? I suppose at least I know that IF you treat them nicely the battery can last a long time. But it's not a given.

Just like to say I love this thread. Read it all the way from post 1 before I decided to buy my Leaf. My 30 kW Leaf is delivered in May from the UK.

I hope my battery is as good as yours @Linuxluver and not as bad as the above. Mine will come with 12,000km, so hope they treated it well.

Just need to get my hands on the Leaf Spy interface and App.

Realistically how often does the price spike over night and by how much?

As a Flick user I have seen $6 / kwh for one or two half-hour segments during winter mornings, normally around $0.22. I vaguely recall seeing $30 another time.

Just avoid the dead of winter weekday mornings, say 7 to 10 and I doubt you would ever see that.

I would show you an example from last winter but Flick's inline data tools are little more than eye candy regarding price history, no doubt part of their business model.

Completely smashed Whangarei's recent record of 62.

You should be fine. That LEAFSpy is just very wrong-looking. The blue lines below the graph axis - with the above portion red? - simply isn't possible. A module is either red or blue - not half and half.

I've been quiet because I've been busy doing the Leading the Charge drive from Bluff to Cape Reinga to raise awareness about electric vehicles.........and I had to drive my 30kWh LEAF from Auckland to Bluff just to get started.

Here's a brief summary of the trip TO Bluff based on charging legs.

Day One

Auckland to Te Awamutu - charge for 25 mins to 95%.
Te Awamutu to Taupo on the back road - mainly 80kph - no one around - arrive on 14%.
Charge for 3.5 hours at 32amp at EV Central Taupo. No fast charger in Taupo yet, but VERY soon!
Leave Taupo on 99%. Drive to Napier and arrive on 26% at about 5pm. I could carry on to Wellington, but I've driven enough for one day.

Day Two

Napier to Waipukurau. A quick charge there - 15 mins.
Waipukurau to Palmerston North - Charge at The Square and have a quick lunch.
Palmerston North to Lower Hutt. Arrive about 4pm after some stops on the way to see old, familiar places. Charge overnight at the hotel.

Day Three

Drive to the ferry terminal at Aotea Quay for 9am sailing.
Sail to Picton, arrive 1pm-ish.
Drive from Picton to Richmond (via Queen Charlotte Dr - only 107km to Nelson vs longer route via Blenheim). Arrive on 32%.
Charge in Richmond for 25 mins (after a 20 minute wait for another user).
Drive to Murchison - 112km and over the Hope Saddle - in driving rain. Arrive at motel on 34% at about 8pm. Charge overnight at motel to 100%.

Day Four

Good Friday. Cyclone making itself felt. Driving rain and high winds.
Left Murchison at 5am to avoid traffic. Didn't see another car until almost at Greymouth (162.3km).
Arrived Greymouth on 12%.
Charged at fast charger in Greymouth to 95%.
Drove 62km to Jacksons Retreat, arriving just after 09:30am on 56%. Uphill all the way. Raining. It's a lovely spot anyway.
Charge for 4 hours, to 94% at 16amp. They charged me $5, put us in an enclosed area t ostay dry..... and we could use the toilets. Sweet.
Drive through Otira Gorge, Arthurs Pass and Porters Pass about about 80kph using cruise control. Bad weather and Good Friday mean the road is empty. Arrive in Springfield about 15:15.
At this point I have 34% battery and I reckon I need t least 35% to get to Christchurch, so I plug in at the Springfield Domain camp ground for 45 mins to add a safety margin of about 10%.
Drive from Springfield to the fast charger at the Z Station in Moorhouse Ave in Chch. I arrived on about 12%....as it was downhill, with the wind from Springfield. I would have *just* made it without the charge in Springfield, but I'm not a 2%-er.....I like a better margin.
We charged to 80% and left for our hotel in Rolleston, arriving there about 7:30pm...right on schedule.

So that was Murchison to Christchurch via Greymouth in under 12 hours.....with only one fast charger along the way.

Day Five

Left Rolleston on 100% and headed to Timaru. Stopped in Raikaia to check out the progress on the new fast charger. Looks good! But not ready yet. (Went live the following week)
Arrived in Timaru on about 30%. Charged up to 95%.
Drove to Waimate to check out the charger. Didn't really need to charge but added 8% to go from 72% to 80%. Just because. Waimate is a really cool place.
Drove Oamaru. Only 47.5km. Didn't really need to charge much but now I'm a charger groupy......
Drove to Dunedin. 112km. Some long, BIG hills in there!! Arrive Dunedin on 15%. Never in doubt, but lower than I expected. I drove pretty fast, too.
Charged overnight at the hotel to 100%. We didn't really need to stop, but we wanted to spend the evening in Dunedin just because.

Day Six

Drive 80km to Balclutha. Arrive on 50%.
Charge to 95% and drive to Invercargill, taking the Gorge Rd / Old Cioach Road route because it is shorter than going via Gore. (but going via Gore is a LOT flatter - I didn't know that),
Arrive in Invercargill on 15% after being surprised by all the hills on the "shorter" back route. Again, the result was never in doubt, but I'd used more power than expected.

We then spent two days in Invercargill waiting for the other Leading the Charge drivers to arrive so we could start the trip to Cape Reinga,

Secondly

My daily commute is 60 kms round trip, so that's a minimum of 300kms a week,

At the moment I have an old 1998 sentra which gets 6.2l per 100kms,

Of all the electric cars I like the Nissan, because well, all the nissans we've had have been really reliable

Is there some tool out there that will tell me at what point an electric car would pay for itself, for someone who is not a city dweller/worker?

Once I factor in Purchase cost, Charge costs etc

how many charges a battery can take, obviously it will be a second hand car,

and i will be travelling a good part of my commute at 100kms/h

I live in a small town and work in another small town, so no chargers anywhere around

Same as any other car with no spare - it has a can of goop that gets sprayed in through the valve to temporarily repair a minor puncture. Won't fix a major blowout though.

I'm looking to buy a used LEAF and I checked out a Jap import Gen 1 at a dealer recently with 12 bars remaining, but Leaf Spy reports 82% SOH. I thought first bar disappears at 85%? Any reason why it wouldn't?

As an aside, it's had 1100 charge cycles (very few QCs) at an average of only 15 km/charge, which I guess is plausible. I'm just fishing for whether I should be wary of what Leaf Spy tells me, or wary of the vehicle itself! Any thoughts?

Something not right if the bars are 12 but the SOH is 82%.

Are you sure it was the SoH (State of Health) and not the SoC (State of Charge - which is the current charge level, not the overall health of the battery).

I need to have more faith.

Today I drove my 30kWh LEAF from Napier to Taupo for the 3rd time. I left Napier on 100% and hoped to get to Taupo without topping up. But I was also mindful it was 3C-7C (depending on exact location) in Napier and this time I had two people in the car and a boot full of luggage.

I made it all the way to the Rangitaiki Taven just 39km from my destination...and the LEAF reckoned it has 41km left.

That's a 2km margin. Not much.......but I *know* the run into Taupo from Rangitaiki is largely flat or downhill.....and you get very good efficiency.

My nerve failed and I stopped at the tavern for a coffee and a 30 minute charge at 16amp (Blue Commando) which added just 6% / 10km range. Insurance.

I needn't have bothered......again....as I arrived at the new Taupo fast charger (open just 2 days ago) with 16% and over 30km to spare. Without the 6% I would have arrived on 10%. Easy.

I'll get it right the fourth time. :-)
