Yeah I guess it depends how important appearance is. Personally, I don't normally like white cars but I think white Tesla's look pretty good with their contrasting features - they have a Star Wars Stormtrooper look to them.

Yeah, I know what you mean - I passed a white 3 earlier this afternoon, and it's far less offensive than most white cars, particularly as a result of the black of the tinted glass roof.

Anyway, once in the car it'll not be me needing to look at the outside!

Those prices given above aren't as high as I'd feared, though; I was going by my recollection of what a local 3 owner said he'd paid for getting his 3 wrapped in Auckland - I thought he'd said $8k (and that didn't have the interior bits like doorsills wrapped)

Jafari says Australia is underserved in EVs compared with many other countries due to a lack of government EV and climate policies. The majority of EVs are instead flowing to countries that require car manufacturers to sell them in order to meet fuel efficiency standards and CO2 emission reduction schemes. The UK has banned the sale of all new petrol-run cars by 2030, in South Korea the date is 2025.

... Australia remains the only country in the OECD not to have fuel efficiency standards for CO2. Nor has Australia adopted the Euro 6 noxious emission standards on fuel quality, which was applied to all new cars sold in the EU more than six years ago.

“Australia is not in the race,” says Jafari. “Our partners in the US and Europe and right around the world have a much easier time because there’s a requirement for them to get enough electric vehicles into their markets.”

Last year carmakers warned there would be production cuts due to supply chain issues resulting from the pandemic. But Hyundai Australia’s general manager of corporate affairs, Bill Thomas, says the fact that there are not enough EVs available in Australia is mainly due to a lack of incentives to sell the cars here, rather than supply chain issues.

In Australia, there is a six to nine-month wait on Tesla models. Car manufacturer Kia could only secure 500 of its new electric SUVs this year despite 20,000 Australians expressing interest.

The Driven: Hooked on foreign oil: Morrison does nothing for EVs in budget, but cuts petrol tax

The Morrison government has yet again missed an opportunity to support Australia’s emerging but struggling eletric vehicle market, offering no new targeted support – while offering a temporary reduction on petrol and diesel taxes.

The federal budget, presented by treasurer Josh Frydenberg on Tuesday night, included no new measures to support the uptake of electric vehicles. Widespread calls for added spending on infrastructure, and for a vehicle or fuel efficiency standard, were ignored.

It wasn’t as though they didn’t have any money. ... But it appears that none of this funding will provide a boost to electric vehicle infrastructure, such as the much needed expansion of Australia’s charging network, or increases in hydrogen refuelling capacity.

The budget instead delivered a temporary halving of the fuel excise for six months that the government claims will lower the cost of petrol by around 22 cents, and cost around $2 billion, around the same sum it offered to protect the country’s oil refiners.....

“For the last nine years this government has kept Australians hooked on foreign oil. They’ve been caught asleep at the wheel and are now scrambling. We have seen no Government action on fuel efficiency standards, on vehicle electrification, or on public and active transport, and it is Australians who are paying the price,” Merzian said.

When I checked about the cost of a wrap before ordering my Model 3 it was $6000 for the exterior plus $500 per door to get the sills wrapped. Not having to wrap the roof saves quite a bit of vinyl as well.

I am putting this here rather than the Model 3 thread (maybe that needs to be changed to a ‘Tesla’ thread instead?).

Australian pricing announced* (according to Chasing Cars, at least) for the Model Y.

The standard range 2wd and performance models $AUD$68K and $AUD98K respectively (+ORCs).

Given we may be (finally, hopefully...) getting close to a release of the MY there and here, I thought it was a good time to re-open the Model Y-specific thread to keep posts on that car together, so have posted a link to that article on that thread:

That is one ugly car even by 70s standards. Can see why it wasn't successful. Makes the Ladas of the 70's look classy. At least some companies are now creating some really spectacular looking EVs. The visual appearance is very important for the success.
