gzt:
Servicing is required every 12 months or 20,000km, whichever comes first. Service prices are as follows:

12 months/20,000km: $190.37
24 months/40,000km: $504.25
36 months/60,000km: $190.37
48 months/80,000km: $661.32
60 months/100,000km: $190.37
72 months/120,000km: $504.25
84 months/140,000km: $190.37
96 months/160,000km: $661.32

Based on what I've learned about this the reason for the higher cost every 40,000 km is due to a coolant change.

As context, the 2019+ Kona and Niro are similarly afflicted and the reason in their case is down to using a very-expensive "low-conductivity" coolant that Hyundai put in place as a rolling change. The basis for moving to this coolant type is that several crash test EVs in S. Korea caught fire some hours subsequent to the test. You can find these events with a google.

If you look under the hood of the Ioniq 5 there are two coolant tanks that I'm speculating is the result of them minimising the volume (and therefore expense) of coolant that circulates through the battery pack.  I'm not clear if Kia did the same with the EV6.

So, perhaps it's the same thing with BYD? I'll add that my 2018 Kona service costs have been $220 a year while under the short 3 year warranty so the lessor BYD services of $190 don't look that bad in comparison. It has standard green coolant so I'll just have to hop out a bit more spritely in the event of an accident, as Tesla owners would as well.

Parody of Australian ad. Notice the intentional misspelling of Australien, and alteration of the Australian seal. Rough language

Electric Vehicles

Honest Government Ad, the juice media

The Australien Government has made an ad about its Electric Vehicle policy, and it's surprisingly honest and informative.

Antidotally EV's are getting super common around Auckland at least. And we are starting to get a good mix of various brands. Just a couple of years back the original shape leaf's were by far the most common.

Was driving north to silverdale on Friday, and we had a cluster of three EV's. Amusingly one other car was identical to what I was driving (AZE0 Autech in black with blue wheels & halogen headlights). The other was a warehouse group Kona.

Then on Saturday we visited takapuna beach. In addition to our leaf, there was a model 3 (with custom matt blue wrap), an Ioniq 5 (with towbar) and a model Y all in the small bit of the car-park we could see.

Some normality seems to be returning to the used EV market after the Post Ukraine invasion rush.

  • An Ioniq asking $28.5k (some of these sold for around $25k before the war, but then they surged to about $35k)
  • Five 64kWh kona's under $55j (cheapest with a buy now of $50k)
  • a Niro asking $55k
  • A model 3 asking $53k, and thee more asking $59k
  • MG ZS EV's from $38,800
  • 62kWh leaf's under $50k (after rebate), and 40kWh ones under $27k after rebate.

Assume this is a combination of:

  • A sudden rush in delivery of New EV model's. People selling their model 3's as they take delivery of model Y's etc. (model Y's have been delivered surprisingly fast)
  • Sharp pricing on the New EV's like the BYD Atto 3, Niro, Niro Plus making buying a used EV less attractive
  • Recent decreases in petrol prices, lessening the made rush for EV's.

Don't buy any Renault Zoe model, unless it's the 2022.

The 2021 Renault Zoe became only the third car in Euro NCAP history to be awarded zero stars for crash safety. The previous version of the popular electric hatchback received a five-star rating in 2013, but thanks to more stringent safety tests and the omission of certain safety features, the latest model scored poorly.

Electric Vehicle Web: 2022 Renault Zoe safety upgraded after 0-star Euro NCAP rating

Two months after getting an embarrassing 0-star safety rating in the Euro NCAP crash test, the 2022 Renault Zoe has received an upgrade for improved safety in France. Prior to this move, Renault had slashed the price of Zoe by EUR 500 at the start of the year that could also soften the impact from the Euro NCAP results.

Cheapest I can get a Leaf E+ out of Japan is roughly what a brand new base Atto 3 would cost me with the full rebate. So there is significant downwards pressure from the new market alone.

Frankly I'm surprised any used E+s are moving at all on our market.

Used EVs seem to be priced as if no new ones are available - I test drove an ex-demo 2021 Kia Niro last week, which the dealer was asking $60k for.  When I pointed out that a brand new, 2022 EV would be cheaper after the rebate, he said they could do a deal.  I think the Atto 3 is a game changer in terms of specs and value.

I mean I want an E+, I'd use the range and extra AC charging capability a lot so I could almost justify it, but it's almost bang on the Atto 3 rate if I do all the work importing it myself.

But it's still a very old tech, with a battery prone to degradation (although far more hardy than the 40kwh) and an obsolete charging standard that you can't really take advantage of here and will need to be swapped out for CCS at some point. The justification for that kind of premium over a newer car with a bigger screen and the LFP battery option isn't there, especially given the batteries from EV Enhanced aren't able to be fitted to 62kwh models. So longer term, it is a question mark for sure.

So far as I'm aware (stand to be corrected) Leafs are the only EVs with V2G compatibility due to their Chademo charging system. That is a significant deciding factor for us considering updating our 2012 24kWh Leaf to a 16 blade EVs Enhanced battery. It will give us V2G ability at less than the cost of a (smaller kWh) Powerwall.

Sure, you might get V2H capabilities with the Chademo connector...but is that at the sacrifice of a better vehicle? I'd be buying the vehicle based on its primary task (being a vehicle).

I got the impression they are only upgrading the battery, not the whole vehicle.

I don't suppose you've heard anything from them? I've reached out to them both on their site and via Twitter to see if there is any news on timing, but no response. I could try *calling* them I suppose...

The reply I received from them a week ago was:

"Thanks for getting in touch.

We are working very hard to complete development of the 16 Blade Green variant and we are very aware that many people around the world such as yourselves are looking for a solution to their ongoing loss of range with their otherwise practical and cost effective Nissan LEAFs.

Our aim is to make the Green variant available within the NZ market later this year. The cost will be approximately 1/3 of the price of a new Nissan LEAF. We want our product to be as affordable as possible for our customers as we are keenly aware that it would be extremely distressing if the LEAF fleets around the world became not cost effective to fix. Customers will trade in their existing used batteries to offset the cost of the new aftermarket upgrade. The trade in will obviously be dependent on the SOH and capacity of the used battery."

We wait wish bated breath as "later this year" goes down to the wire...

Yeah, "later this year" is what they were saying all along so nothing new there. I suppose at least if they are still saying "later this year" then that tells me what I most need to know: should I hang onto the Leaf or flick it off for $5K and do something else. Where we are right now - top of a steep hill in both directions on SH1 - it is essentially undriveable so I either need to get a new battery or get rid of it. It's just slowly decaying sitting unused outside otherwise.

Is V2G capability really that common in NZ? Even down the line, if the kits become affordable, Chademo may be functionally extinct by that point.

Unlikely to fit rooftop solar to our current place so unsure if that potential use case is really there.

a month ago you'd be able to sell this for a fortune, could still get good money for it now, but not as crazy as before
