gzt: But yeah for the same price Toyota Lexus 300e full electric coming this year NZ$79k

https://www.lexus.co.nz/en/models/ux/ux-300e-limited.html

I have admired the styling of Lexus for a few years now - I would rather pay the extra $7k for the Lexus over the Leaf (if I had $70 odd thousand burning a hole in my pocket).

I mean, if you are ok with about 200KM of range and you are ok with buying a BEV in 2023 that is based on the old ICE platform, then I guess Lexus might be for you.

Would put it in the same group as the Mazda MX30: they might be OK city cars. But why would you pay Model Y/EV6/Ioniq 5 prices for a car with such a short range in 2023?

I think range has increased since your last look? The spec on that NZ page says 360km NDEC. This NZ announcement says 72.8KW with 450km WLTP:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/131205346/nzs-most-popular-electric-car-gets-another-price-cut

"For the second time in two months, Tesla has lowered pricing on its two most popular models sold in New Zealand – the Model 3 and Model Y.

The entry-level Model 3 is now priced from $68,900 plus on-road costs, and the entry-level Model Y priced from $73,900; signalling a $2,000 drop.

The price of each nameplate’s flagship Performance grades are unchanged."

Good spotting. I wasn't aware the UX300e was getting an upgrade. Should note we are still a few months away from the upgrade landing. "Further information about the Lexus UX 300e will be revealed closer to the New Zealand launch in mid-2023"

Will be interesting to see if they can hold the current rebate eligible price point with the bigger battery. Will be a fairly strong offing if they can. For a comparison, only the base trim 64kWh kona (484km WLTP range) is rebate eligible. While the UX has a touch less range, and slightly slower fast charging, the interior and features are a lot better.

Note 3 in the disclaimers on that page:
"This car is ineligible for a rebate because the sale price is expected to be over $80k."

Top of the page and elsewhere says $79k model is rebate eligible. My mobile browser does not display the note text you referenced for some reason.

Yeah, totally agree - and for the life of me I could not find the superscript ³ anywhere on the page, other than in the disclaimers. Seems very strange.

That's still not great efficiency for a 2023 EV. A Model Y with a 62kWh battery pack has 455km of range (WLTP). There's also no mention that the new version can charge faster than 50kW, which is the max of the current model.

Took me a while to find disclaimers (on desktop). Only accessible by clicking the disclaimer button.

Some mixed messaging here for sure. Page is set up for the current version (54.3kWh total, 45kWh usable), and clearly lists the RRP as less than $80k (incl ORC), and has fine print saying it is not eligible for the rebate.

I don't think we can read anything into future pricing from this (as the entire page is set up for the current version of the car)

It also notes the car with new orders are expected to land in late 2023. Assume those will be the new bigger battery version.

I did take a quick look on trade-me, and 2022 registered cars can be had at reasonable prices.

There a private sale of a 2022 in red with 11,500km asking $61,500. And what I guess is an ex demo 2022 in white asking $63k

Obviously the UX300e is a niche vehicle. The relatively short range & slow fast charging of the current version, put's it in a similar market space as the electric mini, BMW i3, mazda mx30, Honda e etc. Nice cars fill the kind of duty that we use our 24kWh leaf for. Commuting, city errands, and perhaps the odd day trip beyond the city limits. But not ideal at all road trips (where cars like the model 3, Kia niro, kia EV6, Atto3 etc would be far superior).

Will be interesting to see if the charging speed gets faster with new bigger battery version of the UX300e. Sounds like they will be sticking with CHAdeMO from the press release which spells that it will feature both ports. (perhaps I am reading too much into this).

I am hopeful that lexus will be able to keep a rebate eligible price point. If they can, with 450km of WLTP range, it will be a strong offering. Hopefully they add a little frunk too.

But if they can't, it will be a lot more diffucult to sell. I sat in a UX300e at the mall. Interior was nice, seats were fine, but the slightly larger Lexus SUV next to it (and my own older lexus RX), are quite a step up in seat comfort and the likes.

It's true that the efficiency isn't great, But I don't really think it matters to the market they will be selling it to.

People who are going to be doing a lot of fast charging are unlikely to be considering this model (if the charge speed doesn't dramatically increase from the current version). Options like the Model 3, Model Y, EV6, Kona, Atto3 do better in that application.

And for home charging, power is so cheap, a small efficiency difference dosn't have a big impact on running costs.

Using EV-database.org numbers:

UX300e: 191Wh/km

Model Y: 167Wh/km

Kona 64kWh: 162Wh/km.

So the UX300e consumes 14.4% more power than a model Y, and 17.9% more than a Kona. Over 100,000km at 18c/kWh, this works out to $522 extra power costs. Fairly small fry in the scheme of $70k odd vehicles.

I must say it is impressive how efficiently Tesla have got their vehicles. The model Y is substantially bigger & more powerful than the likes of the Kona, yet is very close to it in energy consumption.

Should note that the Tesla is a ground up design with efficiency in mind (and the styling reflects that), also tesla is willing to accept the likes of worse acoustics, in return for weight savings. The UX is not efficiency focused. (Ignoring the Electric version of the UX, lexus has their CT200h, and IS sedan for those who care about efficiency). Things like areo would have be secondary to having the styling & smallish footprint lexus wanted. And if it is anything like my lexus, it will be packed ful of sound deadining. A quick glance at the spec sheet shows that lexus havn't shyed away from features that add weight. Comes standard with 13 speaker audio (with class D Amp), Powered seats (10 way driver, 8 way passenger, seat heating and ventilation, power tilt and telescope steering wheel, steering wheel heater, roof rails (also adds drag).

[edit] - As a car that looks the same as the ICE version, this would be a good option for those want an EV that dosn't look like an EV. Remove the electric badges, and it would take an enthusiast to spot the difference.

I'm pretty confident the fine print is the error, not the headline price.

That said, they probiably should be listing the car as sold out on the first page of the website, rather than requiring scrolling to get to that info:

NSW introduces fines of up to $2,200 for “ICEing” electric vehicle charging stations.  Also appears to apply to EV's if not plugged in:  “A driver must not stop in a parking area for the charging of electric-powered vehicles unless the electric-powered vehicle is plugged into an external source of electricity.”
