Based on the http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/roadcode/about-driving/merging.html page the car on the right should have adjusted speed to merge. Yes it was on the right however it was merging with the main flow of traffic therefore it was at an intersection. All the OP's car should have done was keep speed and not speed up or slow down and allowed the car on the right to merge safely.

Leaving a merge lane after turning right at an intersection

Some roads have a merge lane to help vehicles that have turned onto the road join the traffic flow.

If you are in a merge lane at an intersection:

show you want to merge by signalling for at least three seconds
move into a safe gap in the traffic
adjust your speed and following distance.

This is just a standard 2 into 1 merge where neither lane right of way, there are 100's across NZ. The fact that there's a roundabout, or that OP is on the "main road" is irrelevant. If one lane was required to give way then there'd be dashed lines indicating that the lane was ending.

I am seriously wanting a source for what you are claiming. From my understanding the keep left rule only applies to motorways. But I can be wrong, and a source for your claims would be handy in that regard.

It's a simple rule. Keep as far to the left as practicable. This applies to any road. On any dual carriageway you must use the left lane unless overtaking, although most drivers in NZ think they have a right to drive wherever they want and impede traffic. I don't know where you got the only on motorways thing. Most of NZs dual carriage ways are highways not motorways.

If there was a clear lane on the left I would have beeped at you too. You clearly sped up. That's dangerous and silly. I suggest you take a defensive driving course.

Xile has already quoted from this rule on the 15th.

Just as the camera doesn't continue to show the view of the Toyota that should have been obvious to the driver, it doesn't show anything of the left lane situation. Lane merges can be accomplished without having a left lane.

In watching it I felt like the OP was anticipating the resultant situation; I'm never that fast on the horn.

There is a duty of care in this situation, which would also need to be addressed had an accident occurred and blame needed to be attributed.

Having smooth traffic flow (not to mention unbent cars) dependent on everyone paying attention and not being a***holes is not a good strategy, in my humble opinion. Sure, it's the best strategy *if* everyone is paying attention (science proves it!) ... But life ain't like that.

Completely agree with this.

One thing i don't understand at all on auckland roads is the frequent "queuing lanes" at traffic lights. What i mean here is where the intersection has an extra lane on the left that then merges back into the left lane shortly after the lights. This only seems to encourage aggressive undertaking and people just being... muppets. (i'm not talking about extra lanes to facilitate turning left or right here)

Balmoral road has these all the way along.

Had my hairiest moment on a bike so far at the merge by st lukes yesterday, with an agressive merge from a car leading into braking on top of me due to the car in front of us braking.

But the one by the caltex is the worst of all. Two lanes into one with approximately two metres of 'merging zone'. Impossible to navigate without braking and easy to be side by side with others setting out from the same green light.
