All this preamble aside I'm just looking for general advice especially in the Christchurch area, oh and if wanted to use the charger that my family in Oxford has installed (one of these https://emotorwerks.com/store/residential/juicebox-pro-40-smart-40-amp-evse-with-24-foot-cable) what would be involved for a leaf?

The NZ Ioniqs seem to have a type 2 plug, whereas that EVSE says it has a type 1. The LEAF has a type 1, so all you need to do is check which plug type their car has.

They are using a Type 2 plug, so I would need an adapter cord, which go for about $300. But would any leaf benefit from that charger or only if they have the 6.6kw option?

Leaf would benefit from that as it could then charge at 16A rather than the 8-10A of a standard plug (doubling the speed=half the time)

The main thing is that you wouldn't benefit from the faster charging because you just wouldn't need to put that much charge into your car to get home. If you get a car with only the lower built in charger, the Type 2 charger will at best charge your car at the maximum rate that your car can handle and that would only be about 50% faster than with a standard outlet and your own EVSE.

I go up to Auckland a few times a year to visit some friends and I stay at their place for a few hours, I can easily run an extension cord into their garage and plug my car in, I'd get enough charge to get my car over 80% which is all I'd need to get to the fast charger halfway between my place and theirs.

That's rather reassuring to know, probably isn't worth dropping $300 then. And we always stay at their place for at least 3 hours a visit, which I imagine is plenty of time to get enough charge for getting back home.

It is definitely possible, but you either want 30kWh or watch your speed.

At 110kph on the speedo (not 110kph actual speed) I only get around 100km of driving on a charge with my 24kWh Leaf. This is OK because Home => Work => Home is only 70km.

At 100kph on the speedo I'd probably get 120km and at 90kph I'd defintely get 120km with range to spare.

No option to run an extension cord to a power socket at work?

At work the boss provides charging for my EV. By that I mean there is a standard power socket and I have an extension lead and my EVSE with me.

Thank you, there is no chance of being able to take an extension cord as the car park is outside and there are about 3,000 car parks. Nearest plug could be over 800m away. The car park provider does provide a charging station for the general public, but as staff we can't access it. Even with the current extension to the staff car park to add another 2000 car parks there will be no EV charging included.

I may have to keep my current car for a bit longer before I convert to an EV, as it appears the car park provider may have to dragged kicking and screaming to the future.

I would definitely complain!

If we are talking about providing parking for 5,000 cars then there is definitely justification for adding a handful of charging stations for those using electric cars - even if just the type 2 chargers rather than the much more expensive fast chargers. Clearly the number of EVs will increase a LOT over the next few years, I wouldn't be surprised if by the end of 2020 there were about 10x as many EVs on the road in NZ than today.

That isn't a charger that they have - the charger for an EV is in the car itself. You use an EVSE (EV Supply Equipment) to connect the car's charger to a power supply.

The EVSE connects between the car's charger and whatever power supply is available, and as well as some safety aspects, tells the charger what the maximum power is it can draw. If you get a type 1 cable for it, then you'll most likely be able to charge at a faster rate than using a 10 amp plug.

You're right but how much faster? Worth $300 cable when the 10 amp may be fine for my use case?

I'd suggest if you get an EVSE that will work on a normal 10 amp outlet (it's a good idea, so you can charge anywhere) you can try that, if if it gives you enough charge in the time you have, then spend the $300 on something else... If on the other hand you get that urge to leave early - but the extra cable.

Yes... BUT it can also be used to wipe the error messages and apparently even the battery SoH and capacity can be fiddled... so buying from a reputable dealer is more important... YMMV

If it comes with a ‘factory’ fitted NZ wall plug that’s a good sign, mine came with a commando plug, meaning it’s tge 16A version, which works wonderfully (double speed)in my home (with a $270 sparky fitted female Commano power point) but means I can’t just carry my EVSA around and plug in to a normal wall plug anywhere else.

Generally you’d need to be shown an NZ Electrical certificate for a Japanese modified Evsa (16A) or have an aftermarket NZ new EVSA supplied as the law requires dealers to supply an NZ legal charger.

Just to clarify, folks - in LeafSpy Pro (at least in the old version I have) you can not reset capacity... You can only clear the DTCs (AKA error codes)

There will be a few DTC which is OK - e.g. related to AV unit when GPS was disconnected for example.

Dealership Scanner can reset number of chargers or capacity degradation.

As for the LeafSpy - look at the readings at the lowest level of charge (e.g. ~5% left) and observe Delta V on modules. The smaller - the better. LeafSpy will pop up with the note "weak cell" if there are any.

I haven't had teh Commando power point fitted at home, but I have that option if I want. I can plug in at any camp ground and I can also plug in to any standard 10A outlet. It's nice to have the versatility.
