Lots of cars being manufactured in China on purchase orders placed months ago and going to be put on ships and sent to markets around the world including NZ. What's going to happen in NZ - they'll start stockpiling them? The dealers will go broke if they can't sell them.

Tesla has cars in stock on their NZ website but not hundreds of them.

Limited alternatives at present to Tesla, but the horizon is changing quickly. It will interesting to revisit Tesla demand in 24 months as there will be much greater variety for NZ'ers from Chinese manufacturers - these will be latest tech/design, almost certainly lower prices, competing against Tesla's ageing Model 3 & Y designs.

An ever increasing erratic Musk is sadly squandering Tesla's early innovator advantage. With no new mainstream models on the horizon, price-cutting /lay offs and recent expensive debacles (ie Cybertruck), I'm predicting bankruptcy within 3 - 5 years.

Are you disregarding the model refreshes that have happened/are happening to the Model 3 & Y? Or that people may have reservations buying into the Chinese market even though they may make cheaper cars?

If Tesla focused its efforts on a cheaper alternative, which it's been planning for years, then that would attract a lot more people than expensive Cybertruck or Model S & X sales which don't even exist in RHD countries. But we'll have to wait and see what actually happens.

getting hit with excessive depreciation.

Never really understood this sentiment. Unless you're buying one of a tiny handful of extremely rare vintage models (in which case it's going to sit in the garage under a sheet) then the car is no more an investment than a screwdriver is. You buy a car to drive until it's time to replace it, not to make money. You buy it, it loses value. End of story.

A lot of this is to do with the cost of electric vehicles getting cheaper and cheaper to manufacture, so the costs of a new one drops. This then flows through to the used car market, as people want a decent discount vs the 'new' price.

I wonder if you calculated the depreciation on a few year old Tesla, what percentage is accountable to Tesla rapidly dropping the price of new models, and is the remaining percentage comparable to any new car depreciating?

Interesting point re consumer reservation re Chinese cars. 12 months ago I would have never considered a Chinese car due to privacy concerns. Today, I would still be reluctant, but I'm starting to soften, because some of the latest EV offerings just look so attractive. I was in Tasmania for holiday a few months back - it seems every second car on the road was a MG, so a lot of new buyers clearly aren't concerned.

Xpeng G6, just one example, where I would be tempted to say privacy be damned, just take my money!

One could argue a number of those alternatives are already here from the Chinese but they have yet to come close to Tesla's overall sales in NZ. "Aging" isn't really true since the Model 3 just a had an overhaul and the Model Y is about to go through the same. While the Cybertruck is unlikely to be made in RHD, it has yet to be a debacle in the US where it does exist.

Most people have no idea about Musk and the hottakes he's posting on Twitter - I think you'd find if you asked the average person on the street who the CEO is of Tesla they probably would not be able to answer. Considering Tesla is still the top selling EV company worldwide (including China) and they make profits on every vehicle, bankruptcy is not a legit concern.

Not sure what Privacy concerns there could be with a Chinese car. The only info the can get from me is my geolocation, when I'm home and away and how often I charge.
Not so worried about that.
Maybe they also got my music listing habits, but since my phone onlyh bluetooth connects that is about it :)

I suspect the main concern of people would be Price and quality of build and MG has covered that with a 7 year warrenty.
The low sticker price and great product reviews for the MG4 (Car of the year) are they main drivers of the sales I'd say.
The on-going clean car discount in Austalia has really helped.

Also in Australia novated leases give you tax benifits (discounts) on cars which helps new car uptake.

If the car has data then theoretically it could be recording everything - including conversations etc. The Chinese authorities do love video surveillance. Potentially they have global video surveillance with their EV sales. Bit an intelligence goldmine really.

Just a reminder

In the US, cases have thrown out of court incidents like hit-and-run because the owner uploaded video or photographic evidence before the police have dealt with it.

Many insurance companies require you to give over any footage if it exists, and would help them with determining the accident's fault, even it can be used against the insurance owner.

So if you're using a dashcam that's not a factory installed feature, think before you tell other parties.

It might be friendly to say "it was my fault" but any lawyer will tell you to shut up.

“As far as we know, Tesla vehicles collect the most amount of data,” says Francis Hoogendijk, a researcher at the Netherlands Forensic Institute who began investigating Tesla’s data systems after fatal crashes in the United States and the Netherlands in 2016.
