MikeAqua:

500km is workable (in the little car) for me too - assuming that's in real world conditions, not one of those cycle ratings (like fuel economy) that are rarely achieved in the real world.

Realistically I'm normally topping up around the 500km mark anyway on long trips.

Recharge time is a major consideration for me.  I have no desire to further lengthen a long journey with long stops.  I just want to get to "B"

500km in NZ is 6-10 hours of driving. Traffic is always slower somewhere and lots of little towns and lower speed zones.....

You should be taking a break LONG before then to be safe on the road. If you're setting out from Auckland and not taking a break until Bulls you're doing it very wrong.

The other aspect of this is the emissions. Stop for a 30 minute break in Taupo....as you should anyway....and you can get to Wellington in the same about of time as an ICE *and* be zero CO2 emissions.

No delay.

When an EV can do 500km there are no more excuses for burning fossil fuels and - at the minimum - flooding the homes of hundreds of millions in 30 years time. many a lot sooner than that.

Anyone notice January was the hottest month ever recorded in NZ?

Consider, then, that this show is just getting started....and to still be doing nothing NOW is a just nuts.

afe66:
If we are honest, the increasing fuel efficiency of the ten's of thousands of petrol cars, I'd argue has a much greater effect on fuel tax income...

This,

The impact of increasing vehicle fuel efficiency on fuel tax has been on the radar or the Government for a long time,

as afe66 says, the solution is to move to a $/km charge like RUC as opposed to a $/litre charge

EVs are a drop in the bucket of this problem, but its not going away, and eventually the govt will have to change the way road taxes are calculated,

I think RUC at the present diesel rate could really slow EV uptake. My ex had a small very efficient diesel car and the RUC really took the gloss off the fuel efficiency and associated savings.

The Green party screwed up RUC's when they were last in coalition with Labour - they ratcheted up RUC's in the <3.5 ton class to punish drivers of gas guzzling SUV's, but counter productively slammed light efficient cars in the process. There needs to be a new <1800 Kg class because it is ridiculous that a small car (be it a diesel mini cooper or a EV) pays the same RUC as a camper van or light truck.

@Linuxluver said that:

The goal is to reduce emissions of CO2 (and methane).

It definitely is easier to replace emitting vehicles with non-emitting vehicles than it is to prevent cows and sheep from expelling  carbon and methane. :-)

But.....NZ isn't a wealthy country (in terms of money in people's pockets) and can't roll over the fleet overnight, even if the cars were there and ready to go.

(snip)

I agree that one goal of EVs is to reduce emissions of CO2 and methane, but others are to provide EVs that are simply better to drive than petrol vehicles and that are marketed at a price that is not hugely greater than equivalent petrol vehicles.

But, one of the main problems is our increasing population which is clogging up our highways and making it harder by the day "to roll over the fleet".

Even if everyone in NZ was willing to switch to EVs now, how long would it take before supply meets demand?

And EVs, as you acknowledge, aren't the only emitters we need to worry about. For example, it's also those who use aircraft a lot because aircraft worldwide are a major pollution source  .. how can we solve that problem? And of course, large cruise ships, freighters, farm animals etc etc!

Globally, sea (~3% total emissions ) and air transport (~4%) are proportionally minor emitters.

I think you are way off the mark with your break frequency.

Look for example at the rules for commercial drivers as a sensible safety guideline.

A 30 minute break is not required until 5 hours 30 minutes and commercial drivers can drive up to 13 hours within a 24 hour period, provided that period includes 10 hours of rest and was preceded by 10 hours of rest.  You can cover some serious daily km's within those limits (provided you aren't in an EV of course).

I can't think of many trips at all where 500km has taken more than 6 hours (unless towing).  Maybe if you hit holiday weekend traffic around Auckland.

10 hours for 500kmh is an average of speed of 50kmh.  Can you give an example of a NZ journey that long with an average speed so low?  We did better than that on the forgotten highway.  Even Nelson to Jackson Bay doesn't take that long to drive and it's 650km of winding road.

You also don't appear to have considered the possibility of two drivers in one car.  Every toilet stop we change drivers.  Passenger can then have a sleep.  Our record is Nelson to Dome Valley towing a new caravan (long story) stopping only for the cook strait ferry (slept in a private cabin) and diesel (Tokoroa).

You said something there.. Increasing population. Thats the most effective way you can reduce your CO2 footprint: Get fewer children...

Depends where you live ... in NZ we don't have an over-population problem.  Our problem is an ageing population.  In the developing world where population growth is typically fast a reduced birth rate would make a huge difference.

Might as well take it to the logical conclusion and knock a few billion off the earth. No wonder people are freaking out about AI. Computer - "please help us to reduce our carbon emissions."

Some people on FB have recently commented that AA Insurance is "struggling to price and place EV cover" (J P Hale). For example, N Rees said that "I was with AA for my Leaf but recently I upgraded to the BMW i3 and AA wouldn't cover it so had to move to State Insurance".

I wonder why insuring an EV would be a problem if it's no problem insuring a petrol vehicle?
