Unfair! We have both Ford & Dodge late model diesel pickups. With EGR,DOC,DPF,SCR.. Refilling them with DEF's a bit of a pain, and the auto regen thing's a bit freaky - but they've managed to continually raise horsepower & torque while decreasing emissions.

I'm stunned that VW have tarnished their reputation - and, in the US that of diesel cars in general, so badly - for a bit of extra market share/profit.

It IS possible to make clean & powerful diesels - just expensive.

The US spits on anything that is not US, look at their BS about Chinese IT and they have never figured out that they cannot make decent motor vehicles period.

In regards to diesel use please note

In almost all countries diesel is at least 50% of transport fuel use regardless of uptake of diesel for consumer cars due to its use for trucks, trains, generators etc
Use of biodiesel significantly reduces emissions particulate, carbon etc [I use biodiesel in my peugeot]

That impression might not be straight forward or correct. I wouldn't mind a Dodge Challenger R/T Hellcat or Tesla S P90D. I doubt "bang for buck" anything exceeds the former and the latter is in a class of it's own.
Most ordinary cars these days are built on a global platform and aren't entirely one-country origin anyway. European VW/Audi use DSG gearboxes essentially made by American Borg Warner but American Ford use German Getrag DSG gearboxes, Porsche have even used Toyota (Aisin) geaboxes, Nissan diesels sold here have essentially Renault engines, Japanese diesels have used Bosch injection systems etc. Many/most of the new Japanese cars sold here aren't even made in Japan.

Just saw the following in this article this will bite consumers in Switzerland '...The appointment came as Swiss authorities said they were suspending sales of Volkswagen brand diesel vehicles that could contain devices capable of cheating emissions tests, including Audi, Seat, and Skoda vehicles built between 2009 and 2014. They said this could affect 180,000 vehicles...'

Question is which ones have cheating software vs ones that just have real world problems. Eg claimed fuel consumption vs real world, battery life of your Mobile phone laptop etc
