As stated before, yesterday was the right day to buy an EV. Especially with the additional 10c fuel tax proposed by the Auckland City Council.

Yes, my bad. I think I intended to write importing them slower than they are selling them (in the last 6-8 weeks anyway).

I was referring to the decisions you and I make now. I'm OK with sacrificing a few minutes on a longer trip to avoid adding more CO2 to the already rapidly escalating problem. Others place their convenience above the future of their kids....and everyone else's.

You could be right. :-)

In October there were 430 EVs sold. That's 94 higher than September and 89 more than the previous record (two months prior).

There are now 5404 EVs on the road as of October 31st. Thats up from 1050 in January '16.

Yes it does, in fact according to LeafSpy (or the BMS to be fair) the battery health improves if you charge it warmer :) Its a strange situation thats making me doubt everything I know about Li-ion batteries and longevity. My battery health at 32C was 94% and at 16C its 88%! I guess I can always warm it up for a couple of days and cram the power in if I need to make a long trip. :)

Absolutely one can avoid 2-3 10 minute stops to charge if you don't mind emitting the 80kg of CO2 the average car will release from 35L of petrol on a drive from Auckland to Wellington. (edited - sorry mixed up pounds / gallon and kg / litre in my first attempt).

Every car......except those that don't burn fossil fuels.

I know I keep banging on about this, but it really does matter. Ignoring it is now actually killing people.....and one day that could be your kids or grandkids.

Yesterday was the best day to start driving an EV......but today will have to do.

This is what drove us to buy a Leaf. Its true its good value and a fun car, but ultimately what got my butt off the couch was wanting to make a difference. There just aren't that many excuses left to drive an ICE for most people (I mean 95% of people). If we need to go to Auckland from Wellington without stopping we can always rent a cheap ICE car but otherwise our 30kw Leaf is fine.

There comes a time when pointing your finger at others just doesn't work anymore. The world is getting worse because of people like me, not some evil company somewhere or the Trump show. Its just people like you and me making choices.

The EV is making the choice a no-brainer, more compelling by the day. Cheaper, faster, better. I predict 5 years from now only the very old and the very poor with have ICE engines. All the luxury ICE cars we see today will be 'a poor mans Tesla' (they already are in the U.S.)

As for how to make the change faster, its carrot and stick. The obvious way would be a petrol tax and ICE exclusion zones but its a bit early for that stick. We could improve the carrot, more EV lanes, free parking etc. I'd like to see dedicated EV parking spots, that would be cheap to implement (maybe revenue positive for councils with the fines) and visible too. Making ICE cars a 'lower class of vehicle' is the best way to proceed until we can use the stick.

In Auckland, Vector charging stations are for free. Big props to Vector for that.

First it has to estimate SOC, which is an rough estimate, and from that and a magic formula it works out SOH. Internal impedance is one way, but there are many others. Since the BMS has a microprocessor its likely a complex formula using historical data for the battery.

But whatever its doing its not taking battery temperature at the last charge into account so its possible to fluctuate wildly especially on the 30kw models.
