There have been numerous threads on here about dangerous overtaking, lane-changing and inconsiderate or stupid driving in general.

I thought I'd share some footage I took on a recent holiday, this is how it's done in Vietnam.

(Apologies, it's a bit shaky.  Handheld.)

It's an exaggerated version of the thing I see on the Northern Motorway every day - arrogant drivers trying to go faster than the ambient traffic flow by swerving between lanes and exploiting the defensive driving of those people who follow at a sufficient distance.

I don't see the problem.

That is efficiency using the whole width of the road.

This driving style is reasonably uniform across Asia. I've been to Thailand (amongst other Asian countries) quite a few times and used to think the driving there was crazy until I got used to it and saw how they actually all fit in together. I went to Sri Lanka 6 years ago and the driving there scared the crap out of me, it was a relief to get back to Thailand!

Yes, somehow it seems to work reasonably well.  We saw little in the way of road-rage, cutting in front of someone is the norm and is tolerated.

In saying that, some manoeuvres really are very unsafe (including some of the ones in the bus trip in my vid above) and in the 13 days we were there we witnessed one nose-to-tail and two people who had been knocked off their moped.

Depending on how you interpret the stats, you're 4 times more likely to die in a traffic accident in Vietnam than in New Zealand.

in terms of bad driving (not the state of un-laned traffic flow), if you have a dashcam you will find them. but yes, there are places where lanes don't mean the same thing as in NZ and hence driving within lanes is a mystery to those.

what's the road death per capita here? if it's not high then they are not collecting the stats properly:

Saudi Arabia road deaths per capita is 27.4 , New Zealand is 6, UK is 2.9.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Road deaths per (billion) vehicle km is another way to compile stats - possibly better when considering road safety stats when some countries have low can ownership rates etc.  Not many countries submit those stats.

On that basis, per km travelled, you're about 4x safer in NZ than Brazil, 2x safer than South Korea, slightly safer than the USA,  Belgium, Spain - and surprisingly IMO - Japan.

UK still rates as very safe.  For the explanation of that, my money is on compulsory third-party insurance keeping the worst idiots (and many young people - because of the cost of insurance) off the roads.
