Folks,

My Company is doing Japanese to English Instrument Cluster (aka Dash) Conversions for Nissan Leaf & Toyota Prius ZVW30

Clusters for above are available in stock.

Toyota Aqua - in the pipeline.

Monday - Sunday, Greenlane, Auckland. Price inquiries - PM.

If there is an interest to other makes and models - feel free to express your interest in here. A lot of time and money are involved in R&D for every solution, including buying clusters from wrecks, making my own gear and buying specialized tools, and of course programming.

Donation of Clusters from fresh JDM wrecks are welcome. AV units from Nissan Leaf with or without SD cards are welcome.

Wanted: Nissan e-NV200 Cluster

What sort of price for a leaf?
My parents have one and sister has just recently got one too.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Congratulations on providing this service @Ruki. The frustration I had when recently changing cars trying to find a vehicle that didn't communicate with me in Japanese (or was able to be easily converted) led me to buy NZ new. Since that isn't an option for the Leaf, and Nissan insist on integrating their climate controls with infotainment, I hope you are successful.

Have now few Leaf English Clusters in stock and few Prius ZVW30 English Clusters in stock. Can ship those Nationwide. Conversion of Prius dash requires dash dismantle and can be done by qualified Toyota tech.

Solution for Aqua (aka Prius-C) re-style (with colorful display) is in the pipeline as those are becoming very popular and I have been asked to look into it.

Currently hunting for e-NV200 dashboard - please whistle if you come across wrecked one. Your bonus will be limited only by "your imagination and my affordability" (old saying :-))

Just a thought I had on the way home today (while enjoying the greater functionality of my new English Dash)...

What’s to stop people flashing their speedometer mileage down a few thousand kms if one day EVs have to start paying RUC? Do diesel cars with digital dash’s have a hubo fitted for this reason?

Digital dash's are actually much harder to cheat the RUC on than analogue ones that use a cable speedo. As it is a simple matter of unplugging the speedo cable. And even worse were early systems that use an electronic sped sensor, that only fed a signal to the dash. Install a switch in that wire and no more watching the distance count up.

At least now the car manufacturers are wising up, They do things like feed the signal to the dash first, then use the CANbus to send the speed data to the other ECUs. So disabling the speedo signal means your automatic gearbox doesn't work, and the engine goes into limp mode. And they will normally save the distance data in multiple places.

My understanding is that the Police are now allowed to search diesel vehicles without a warrant for the purpose of finding any odometer tampering devices. And I have heard that if you are claiming back the GST on diesel used for business purposes, they will compare how much diesel you have bought Vs how much distance you have driven. And whenever you go for a WOF check, your current mileage gets recorded. Supposedly you get sent a nasty letter if that mileage reading says that your RUC is expired. It would be a very bad look if your recorded distance suddenly dropped, and the next reading didn't return back to the original trend. And they also monitor your average distances driven. I have heard of someone getting investigated just because they owned a diesel vehicle that did high Ks. Then they got a new job that meant that they were now driving alot less. And that was a red flag in the system - investigating why their average distance driven suddenly dropped.

So on average it is much harder to cheat the RUC today compared to say 20 years ago.

Another factor, when RUC gets reintroduced on EVs, it makes sense to also introduce it onto petrol cars. As there is a cost for driving in the form of road wear, traffic congestion, pollution from things like brake and tyre dust, ACC costs etc. That is the same no matter how fuel efficient your car is or what energy source it uses. Compare a Toyota Prius C and an 80s turbo hatchback. Vastly different fuel consumption, but similar weight, same cost of traffic congestion etc.

Any taxes on petrol or diesel should be set to only recover the environmental costs of burning petrol or diesel. To keep things consistent no matter what the end use is. The environmental cost of burning a litre of petrol or diesel is the same if it gets used in a car, boat, generator, lawnmower, etc.

What is the expected RUC for EV calculator? It will be hard to check how much energy were used to charge your battery. km/kWh differs significantly between same models not to mention different models.

I was surprised to read that the [overseas] trend is to make ODO bigger - for example "employee in a transport company" wants to be paid for the fuel they've burnt standing in the never ending traffic jam.

Had a bit of fun today: managed to convert Toyota Aqua (aka "Prius C" in New Zealand) Instrument Cluster with colorful LCD display in the middle from Japanese to English. It is fancy one, has huge menu (bigger than in your home TV) vs basic Aqua model with simple speedo.

Our Toyota Alphard hybrid has a hugely complex one given the age of the vehicle, 98% of which is indecipherable to me. For some reason, the Japanese for Power is "Power" though, on the radio.

There's all kinds of stuff about service planning, concierge services and so on. In Japanese...

Toyota Aqua with LCD was difficult one. Some cheap versions of Aqua do not have that LCD screen and nothing to convert there. On that LCD screen you go through multiple pages related to the Energy System. When powered on the bench - can't see much there.
